Power window update and request for more help

After my drivers side window on the 84 stopped working in the down position, I removed the trim pieces and replaced the drivers switch with the passenger switch. It still didn't work unfortuately. I put the old drivers switch in the passenger side and confirmed that the switch is not the problem.

The garage is quiet and I do not hear any clicking sound coming from the motor trying to move a broken window ribbon, so it's time to start trouble shooting. I have the battery disconnected and put my meter on continunity check and touched the blue wire going to the motor and to the brown wire going to the motor on the passenger side. I get a tone which tells me there is continuity and that the motor does not have an open.

When I try it on the bad side, I do not get a tone. Which tells me there is an open at the motor. In looking at the schematic of the motor, there is a rectangle with a circle in the middle and the letter "M." On the back side (for rolling the window down) there is a line that connects two dots and has an arch (bridge) connecting the two dots as well. Could this be a thermal break switch to stop the motor when it overheats? If so, is there a way to reset this thermal switch? If not, then it looks like a motor may be the next step.

Thanks,
John

If you put the meter on DC volts and connect one end to ground and place the other end of the meter on one of the wires on the motor then push the button up or down it should read 12 volts. then place the probe on the othe wire and push the button up or down and it should read 12 volts. You may also want to check the ground continuity between the grounds on the switch and the IP ground...its located by taking the passenger side sill off and looking about where you calf would be if you were sitting in the seat.

I would have done a continuity check on the switches. But, you got the same results your way. :D

I would try to apply 12v directly to the 'bad' motor. Don't connect it for a long period, just tap power to it to see if it's working.

That is the schematic symbol for a motor.

I believe you are correct. It's been too long since EE college and can't remember exactly. If you don't use it, you can lose it. :( I don't think you can reset it, the thermal switch/breaker is usually a component that burns open. Use your VOM to see if 12v is reaching that motor, like JonM said.
