5/20/2003 -

Braselton, GA -- Members of the Corvette Racing team of the American Le Mans Series have returned to America following a tour of goodwill visits to American troops in the Mediterranean.

Drivers Ron Fellows, Johnny O’Connell, Andy Pilgrim, Oliver Gavin, Franck Freon and Kelly Collins stayed overseas after the recent testing session in France for next month’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. The drivers and other personnel from General Motors and Corvette Racing went on a tour of several U.S. Navy installations immediately following the test and then spent time at four U.S. military installations.

The drivers and team will return to France for the 24 Hours of Le Mans June 14-15, then will be back in the United States for the resumption of the American Le Mans Series schedule with the June 27-29 Atlanta Grand Prix at Road Atlanta.

The recent trip, which included stopovers in Italy, was a return engagement for the Corvette team, which last year toured several sites including the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet in Bahrain, bringing gifts, signing autographs and swapping stories with thousands of navy personnel. The group also went aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. John F. Kennedy.

“We are very proud of this connection we have,” said Gary Claudio, Marketing Manager for Corvette Racing. “This started as a way for GM Racing to give something back to our military personnel by contributing just a little bit to those protecting and serving on our behalf. It’s something we – as a corporation – are immensely proud to be a part of.”

The Chevrolet Corvette C5-R team will play host to dozens of U.S. naval personnel throughout the 2003 racing season as a part of the Navy Pit Crew, a program in which 10 sailors will be selected from across America to join the Corvette team as special guests at three American Le Mans Series races. The selected sailors will get involved in pit activities and spend time with the Corvette Racing drivers throughout the course of the race.
