The sixth-generation Corvette (code name: C6), due to begin production in late summer 2004, will make its public debut next January at the Detroit auto show. It will retain the current (and long-running) front-engine/rear-drive layout, and will still be powered by a 5.7-liter V-8, mated to either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transaxle.
It will share some underbody components with the all-new Cadillac XLR roadster, but will be priced considerably below the Caddy.
Among the details on the C6 that are circulating within the Corvette community, the new model is said to have fixed headlamps, a longer wheelbase and shorter overall length, and higher output (400-plus horses). It is also expected to share much of the whiz-bang electronic chassis technology from the XLR, including StabiliTrak, MagnaRide and MagnaSteer.
