8/24/2003 - Elkhart Lake, WI -- A last lap pass by the ProDrive Ferrari saw Jan Magnussen take the win from Johnny O'Connell.
At Mosport the circumstances were identical but the result was different. Johnny O'Connell, in the #3 Corvette, held off the #88 ProDrive Ferrari at Mosport for the final several laps. At Road America the #80 ProDrive Ferrari was too much for O'Connell as he was passed on the last lap by Jan Magnussen, who shared teh #80 with David Brabham.
"It tried pass him (Johnny O'Connell #3-GTS Corvette C5-R) under the bridge but he shut the door on me," commented Magnussen after the race. "Then I braked (going into one) about a hundred meters later than I had all weekend. I knew he was going to try and block and I passed him anyway.
"He's not going to as thrilled about it as I am, but we're good friends and he'll get some payback at another time.
O'Connell shares his perspective on the pass: "I thought there were Audis racing behind me, so I moved over from them. It was a mental mistake, it won't happen again. You can't just get caught up in each battle, you have to think about the war. Even with this second (place) we opened up our lead (in the championship) but the mental mistake is something you want to do over."
The final margin of victory was just over half a second.
Coming in third, and one lap behind the lead battle, was the second ProDrive Ferrari of Peter Kox and Tomas Enge.
The American Le Mans Series is next in action on September 7th at Mazda Raceway.
