Requesting a little advice on which primer to use on new SMC valance. From searches I've gathered that epoxy primer will do the trick but are there recommended products by tradename. I can't tell from label which ones work on SMC or are epoxy based.

Please advise.

I am in the process of doing a full body resto and am also replacing my front lower valance as well as my rear exhaust valance.

I am doing my body work using Evercoat Rage and Rage Extreme. Repairs are made with 1.5 oz fiberglass mat / Evercoat finish coat resin and also Kitty Hair and Vette Panel Adhesive when needed. Then I'm going with the PPG brand... "DP" series - DP50LF grey colored epoxy primer/sealer with DP402LF fast-acting catalyst and DT870 reducer.

For some areas I 'm shooting Slick Sand (sprayable filler) and then going over the entire car with a primer/surfacer --- Prima K36 with K201 hardener.

Perhaps this is overkill - I just want to get things straight and smooth as possible -- of course, using guide coats throughout.

Try to keep in close contact with a local paint supplier. I've done that and they help to keep me going in the right direction... plus they're a lot cheaper than the internet (with shipping, etc.).

I hope this was helpful. Good Luck.

Ralph

what kind of resin would you use to bond a unknown resin to smc? I'm trying to bond the remains of a longstyle l88 hood scoop to my 82's hood. also what is best resin and filler to blend it all back in?

Thanks fine69!!!!

I appreciate the detail.

Hope to see pics of your car when done.

Good luck and Best Regards.
