Problems with Coilovers!

I spoke with Callaway on this issue and they knew exactly what I was talking about.

To get the coil over off the Bilstein shocks they have to use a machine press to press it off and put it on a new shock. I sent them my broken shock and a replacement to swap the coil over piece. No real word as to why this happens other then the shaft of the shock that enters the car's frame has a point to create a small groove which became the weak point of the shock and ultimately broke.

No word on if they will charge me, however, these shocks only have 6,000 miles on them and Reliabiltity is one of Callaway's Values. So, I'm confident they will work with me to resolve this.

I am guessing the bearings for the shocks are going to cost a fortune because of how the shocks mount with the FX3?

I am really curious as to how they mount that in there.
I would asume the bearings would come with a new mounting bracket that goes to the frame?

Well I heard back from the Callaway team on my COIL over system. looks like it's a straight $85/hour for the repair.

Is that for designing and manufacturing alternative parts for they failed parts or only for assembly and installation?

Greetings Peter

All that I'm asking Callaway to do is press the coil sleeve from the bad shock and put it on the new that I sent to them. I will reassemble the coil over system when they ship it back. No new parts will be added, problem will not be addressed outside of the fact that the shock broke.

Hey, sorry to hear about your shock! As I am sure you have read from above I broke both back shocks. Neither of the shock shafts came out of the spring, like is shown in your pics. They did break in the same spot though. I can't remember how much the replacments were, but they wern't cheap. Do you know how or when it happened? Both mine broke when I hit 2nd gear hard.Dave

I'm not exactly sure when or how it went I started hearing a bottoming out noise from the rear tire which promted me to investigate further. I took a few more pictures of the affected area. From what I can tell, where the blue upper collar holds the spring in place and the shock shaft travels thru is where a small groove was worn thur the shock shaft creating a weak point.

I'll post pictures later.

COIL has been replaced and my Callaway is back on the road. If the next one goes out. I'll probably look into a different COIL over system.

Frank, do you notice any more clearance now??

I actually have more clearance since replacing the rear "dogbones" on mine - the one side was VERY close to the 1/2 shaft, now there is about a 1/4" clearance :cool

I'm not sure I follow what your asking.

It's difficult to say since I purchased the car with Coilovers already on.

Sorry :(

Just wondering if you noticed any more clearance w/ the new shock / coilover?

Mine has always had coilovers on it, since day 1 however, when I had some suspension work done, I seemed to get a bit more clearance between the shock / coilover and the 1/2 shaft.

Just like Supernatural001, the other side just broke. I will be sending it to Bilstien for repair this time. Not sure why the weak link in the shaft? Broke in the exact same spot. I shifted hard from 1st to 2nd, noticed the rear got a little sloppy and then the thump when I hit a dip in the road. I knew exactly what that noise was.

Frank, You better hurry. Bowling Greeen is just a month away.:beer

Man sorry to hear that!
I have to admit I have been taking it a little easier on my 1-2 shifts.
Keep us posted on the fix!

Just walked in the door. Seems like all I do is travel lately. Just in the past couple of weeks, Indiana, Cincinnati, Orlando and Bermuda. I'll try and ship the shock out tomorrow. Chances are I'll just ride up with Shopview in his CE.

SNAT001. My guess is I won't change my driving style for a while. I love to bang the gears :) Even at the cost of a Bilstein. It's just too much fun.

JUST INSTALLED THE COILOVERS THIS WEEKEND.EVERYTHING WENT GOOD.
THE ONLY PROBLEM WAS THE REAR DRIVERS SIDE SPRING RUBBING THE HALF SHAFT.TOOK A LOT OF GRINDING TO GET THE 1/4" CLEARANCE.
GOING TO DRIVE TO WORK THIS WEEK TO GET ANY BUGS WORKED OUT.WE HAVE A 700 MILE TRIP THIS WEEKEND.

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF I NEED TO HAVE IT ALIGNED?

THANKS
STEVE

I would think only if you changed the ride height. The ride height would change the camber and toe. If you left the height the same it should still be the same spec as before.
