Chevrolet Dealers Receive Updated Production Schedule For All Models Including Corvette

Over the last couple of days, we've seen several reports that automotive manufacturing is currently being affected by a major shortage in semiconductors. According to the reports, just about no automotive manufacturers are immune from this situation.

Apparently, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, car companies started decreasing their orders for semiconductors that go into their cars because of declining car sales as the pandemic started to spread across the globe. As car companies came back online and ramped up production, their semiconductor supplies were thin. However, that's not the whole story.

When just about the entire globe shut down and everyone was staying home - the sale of TVs, gaming consoles and other computer related products skyrocketed. The supplies that semiconductor companies had were shifted from automotive allocation to electronic allocation thus making inventory availability for the car companies all but non-existent.

While we have not yet heard if this semiconductor shortage could potentially affect 2021 Corvette production at the Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant, earlier today, Chevrolet dealers received an updated production schedule containing order and constraint updates for all models including the 2021 Corvette.

According to page 2 of the GM production schedule:

  • MY21 production started on December 14th
  • Production schedule looking solid at 2 shifts

The Stingrays Really Are in the Ocean: The Pacific

Back in November, we reported that Chevrolet dealers were notified that they need to remove the illuminated sill plates from their 2021 Corvette orders, but cause for this was not stated in the official communication.

After speaking to a GM representative recently, the Corvette Action Center has learned that the Stingray illuminated sill plates really are swimming around in the ocean - the Pacific to be exact!

Apparently, the inventory of sill plates was on a ship that sank out in the Pacific ocean on their way from the manufacturer. We laughed, but the GM rep said "this is not a joke". So, there you have it. If you wanted RPO VST - Illuminated Sill Plates for your Corvette - you may want to hit the beach. You just might find a couple sticking up out of the sand!

Let's all keep our fingers crossed and hope that 2021 Corvette production is *only* affected by a periodic LPO constraints like we normally see, and not another part shortage due to COVID!

I was on a conference call today and this topic came up...

Apparently there was a massive fire at an Asahi Kasei Microsystems plant in Japan (October 2020) that is not helping the Semiconductor supply chain any. This plant produces IC for Audio and Photo - so could have major impact on car audio systems. I personally, am not part of this side of the Automotive supply chain, so I could be wrong. Here is a link to an article that discusses the fire:
