Bought the car (84) with bad power steering. Sometimes works, sometimes not! Seems to be worse at idle, then as you try to turn, and the R's go up Viola! we have steering. Lots of metal in fluid!!I'm set to R&R the pump, however, the more I read, could be the rack? Anyone know a test procedure to save me from buying more than I need?
Thanks;
Jerry
What happens is the metal that makes up the components of the rack are harder than the aluminum sheath that surrounds them. As time go's on the aluminum gets warped but the components stay true causing binding in the steering until lubrication is fed.
Metal Fillings are aluminum Id bet. Try running a magnet over the metal I bet Im right.
Reving up the engine will increase the pressure to the rack....Feeding lubrication faster.
This is a VERY common problem with the C4. Ive also had to replace mine due to this problem.
Good news is its fairly simple to replace and basicly inexpensive. Make sure you get an alignment afterwards thats all.
No noise from the pump. It seems to stick at low rpm's. Big Red's comments may be right on! If the rack was sticky, more pressure would make it respond! However, it sometimes sticks at higher rms as well, but usually at idle. Unfortunately for me, it looks like a rack R&R. Since I'm a do-it-yourself kinda guy, any tips in making the job easier?
Thanks;
Jerry
I have the complete step by step removal and repair of the rack on pdf if you'd like. It's too large to post on here so pm me with your e-mail and I will send.
Thanks for the PDF, magmotor. It helped a lot. Made the job much easier. Replaced the rack, and power steering that works is Great!
Thanks for all the replies;
Jerry
