Hi,
I accidentally installed my harmonic balancer backwards on my 1986 L98. Did I crush the thrust bearing?
Old balancer had separated and outer ring was hitting timing cover. I assume cracked woodruff key was from the bad balancer. I mistakenly installed new balancer backwards until install tool screw could not push on balancer anymore. Of course, timing cover is bent and pressing on crankshaft timing gear. I may have inadvertently also hit starter motor very briefly (prob did not even crank more than 1/8 engine turn). Did I crush the thrust bearing? Did I pull the crank forward enough to crush the thrust bearing until the timing cover started to bend from balancer incorrect install? Am I lucky and the only thing that happened is crank lip/edge stopped the crank timing gear, cover, and balancer sandwich. f there is a chance I crushed thrust bearing, is there any easy way to tell while engine is still in car?
Many Thanks for Advice/Knowledge,
Rob
