Help! quadrajet

have 81 with electronic carb. had kit put in and ran good for a while. now it wont idle. carb used to cycle when key was turned on and now it wont. how do i check the solenoid on the carb or how do i check the carbs computer to see if it is working??????????? vietvet

Is the solenoid you refer to the "idle stop" solenoid?

If so, then it should extend when you turn the key on and retract w/ the key off. Purpose is to prevent hot engine run on or dieseling.

Might check to see if all the hoses are still connected or not split. Old hose gets brittle and when reinstalled, it sometimes splits and causes a vacuum leak.

I belive hes talking about the mixture controll solinoid.It does click when the key is in the run posistion.Finding one might not be easy and if you do it wont be cheap.My suggestion is ditch the feedback carb and swap out the distributor (pre feedback) and be done with it.But check with local emmision laws first.

thanks for the reply, i am talking about the mixture control solenoid on right front top of carb. anyone know who would handle them??????? vietvet

Might check w/ Edelbrock as they sell a Q-jet knockoff.

I agree w/ Black 81 tho. My son had an '80 Cutlass w/ the electronic Q-jet. Ditched it and the dist. and put in a regular setup. Worked like a champ.

I rebuilt my quad and it was not hard. While rebuilding it I noticed there was slop in the butterfly shaft. I bought a bushing kit and along with new internal electronic parts, it performs better that ever. The bushing kit is often overlooked and that is were air enters causing a rough idle.
