hi everyone..nice to be onboard with all you vette people and this looks like a very good place for some good info,, i just picked up myself a 64 coupe and i am very happy with the car so far...the 64 i picked up is a NON matching motor,,it has a 350 LT1 in it from a 69 vette i believe...so my 2 questions are,,,can i find a date coded 327 for this car or is the block stamped with the vin on it???...if the answer is no witch i think it is then my second question is,,,i want to put toghter a big block 427 for this car and i was wondering if the BBC will fit in this car or is it just made for a small block...i was wondering if the distributor will hit the firewall and i dont want to modify or dent the firewall...thanks and nice to be onboard

Howdy! I am also new to this forum, but I believe I can answer your questions.

All Corvette smallblock engines are stamped with the last 6 digits of the VIN, in addition to other information such as "F" for "Flint" (Saginaw) engine plant (there are also a very small number of Tonowanda smallblocks, which would be stamped "T"; engine assembly date; and engine suffix code. All this information will be found on the engine stamp pad, just forward of the passenger side head. There are many services which will restamp a clean pad, but all are not able to correctly reproduce the original machining marks (broach marks)on the pad.

All 1965 and later frames have a depressed area on the upper trailing surface of the front crossmember, to accomodate the crankshaft pulley for the MK IV engine. In your case, you would have to modify your crossmember. This is fairly easily done, and very commonly done.

Hope this helps.

Years ago my buddy had '64 with a 427 we put in. Was a super car. A little 'adjusting' to the front cross member for balancer clearance as "64" mentioned. See if you can have a look at any '65 and later frame. You'll see it right away. You'll probably want to use the "blue wrench", everything else bolts right in. You won't even have problems if you want to use HEI.

thanks to both of you,,,great info on this site..and yes i seen the cross member today and see what your talking about,,thanks again
