72 coupe/69 coupe/ 95 coupe
New to c4 forum. I have owned a c3 (72 coupe) for a couple of years, but last
Friday I bought a 95 lti coupe with six speed, and 68,000 miles on it. It's like a whole new world under there. The car has some modifications done to it. A forced air induction system, an edelbrock throttle body (?) and hooker headers. I don't know enought about what it is to know if any other mods have been done. It starts and runs good, and shifts good, but has a lot of interior resonance. After market mufflers.
I want to service the car completly, not knowing the history of it. What all do I need to look at? Trans, rear end engines fluids, etc.
How does the top come off? It is a clear plastic one piece.
How do I tell what rear end is in it?
Any heads ups to look for as I go over the car? What mods can I do to improve it? It will be a daily driver.

Thanks, Tom

I think your 95 has a 3:45 rear end.

Optispark is 1 thing a lot of people watch out for, they say do not get them wet. I pressured washed the engine on my 96 a few time without any problems. Maybe I was lucky. The 96 had was suppose to have had an updated optispark.

I'm sure you will enjoy the C4, they are nice Corvettes!

Get a " Factory Service Manual " off Ebay the are a great help with any troubles you may have Try searching "1995 corvette manual". Oh and welcome:beer to the C4 forum

I have an owners manual and a two set shop manual coming already. I was just looking for any thing that the experience of owning one brings. Thanks for the replies. Tom

The more you get to know it the more warts you may find take em one at a time and make it the way you like. Ebay is a great source for parts.Kepp your maintenance up,synthetic oil and read the forums. Just about every problem passes by here from what I have read.
The resonance Issue has been discussed to death around here depends on the exhaust set up you have try seaching and you will find lotsa good info on what systems are loud or quiet but with your mods it is never gonna be as quiet as stock.Learn to love the sound of power.

Your owners manual will have all the info on top removal and suggested maintence intervals as well as lotsa good info.
The Corvette museum has RPO and Window sticker repro's for your car it will tell you what rear end you have.

Welcome to the world of C4's!

Unless you have full maintenance records, I'd change all the fluids - coolant, oil, trans, diff, etc. It's just a good idea to get started on the right foot with a 'new to you' car.

Corsa makes a very nice exhaust that doesn't resonate in the inside. Most other systems do to some degree. See if you can find out what you have on it.

As for rearend ratio, all 6-speed cars came with the 3:45 ratio.

Do you know if the computer has been reprogrammed by a HyperTech (or other) programmer? With the modifications mentioned, it has probably been reprogrammed. If so, you ought to have the programmer delivered to you that did it.

The roof has 4 bolts that hold it on. The 2 in the rear above the head rests are horizontal. The 2 in the front are vertical and above the visor. There should be a tool in the center console with the appropriate Torx bit for it. If it's not there, or somewhere else in the car, you may want to get one. Check out MidAmerica. The roof is heavy and not something you want to drop. Once it is off, you can store it in the rear pointing backward.

Don't hose down the motor - the OptiSpark, even one on a 95, does not like getting wet. If it gets wet, it may leave you stranded.

Common issues: Check for oil leaks from the front and rear of the intake manifold and the water pump and OptiSpark drive shafts in the timing cover.
It might be time for new shocks.
Check the belt and hoses also.
Check the headlights - do the motors run on for a bit after going up or down? If so, it is time to change the bushings in the headlight gear case.

My 92 is a daily driver and I can't complain. Have fun.

My first suggestion!

First of all good luck and you made a good choice.

What l did was to bring my vette to a chevy dealership that had a policy for first time customers by putting it through an extensive go over for free with an oil change and lube.

The list of what they did with my ok was the following; lube everything that could be lubed.
Make sure that my front hood was aligned properly
Change the antifreeze.
Change the wipers
Check the brakes including parking brakes.
They found a problem with freon hose valve and replaced it.
Changed all fluids, tranny, rear end and what ever.
Adjust whatever had to be adjusted
To tell you the truth l forgot what else they did.

Bottom line it cost me approx $150 parts and $150 labor. Oh and they put it through a full diagnostic. They must have worked on it for 4 hrs but only charged me $150.

p.s. As far as l was concerned l got a steal.

Speaking of getting a steal! The chebby dealers around here would never do that for that price!:eyerole

Thanks for all the responses. I really like this car. I bought it from a lot, and got no history for the car, so I don't know if it has been reprogramed or not. This is something I am not familiar with. How could I tell? Who does this type of programing? All my experience has been with early c3's.
I would like to modify the car to be a good streeter that will get me into the 12's (without nitrous), and still be able to go cross country. Any suggestions will be welcome.
Thanks again for the responses. Tom

Go West Young Man!!!

Hi

If you are planning on taking it cross country you better have a plan or you could brake down on some lonely country road and the only person who could help you has one tooth and barely speaks english.

What ever you do make sure it's done right, in fact why don't you go cross country and then play with it.

Just my two cents!

Alan

Kingman, you don't understand. I want this car to be able to go anywhere I want to, anytime. If I worried about breaking down, I'd buy a bicycle. I've build several small blocks that had plenty of power, and the ability to take me on vacation. This car rides so good and handles so well that it begs for more power. I'm sure that there are forum members that have built stronger engines for their cars that were reliable. This is what I want.
I am looking at using lt4 heads and a gmpp hot cam kit, with a good exhaust system. What I haven't found is what to use for the intake.
Not being familiar with the lt1/lt4 series, I am reading everything that I can find and asking for suggestions. Thanks, Tom

I went with the LT4+ upgrade kit from gmpartsdirect.com for my LT1 and I use fastchips.com for the computer tweak.

If you switch to LT4 heads, you have to have the LT4 (or compatible) intake. I'm also using Corsa Exhaust. My old LT1 is putting down 328 at the rear wheels now. Can't complain and I drive it everywhere and anywhere.

The gmpartsdirect.com kit comes with everything you'll need to convert it to LT4 specs and it includes the Hot Cam and 1.6 rockers. The price was pretty good also.

Besides the LT4 forum here, you might want to check out www.grandsportregistry.com also. These people are LT4 fanatics and have a lot of knowledge on adding HP to the LT4 and LT1.
