Questions about Side Pipes

Have a couple questions about side pipes. Don't know anything about them except from pictures but I sure like how they look.

1. Are they muffled?
2. Is the old exhaust system removed or are these like headers?
3. Is there a clearance problem?

1. All either come with internal muffler-inserts or can be fitted with inserts (aka baffles).

2. There are 2 basic classes of sidepipes: Those that are combo headers-sidepipes (many consider these the best looking) ... and those that can use the OE exhaust manifolds. Of the latter class, there are 3 basic types ... the OE-type sidepipes as found on some 63-74 vettes (also good looking) ... and those that mimic the look of combo header-sidepipes ... and those that look like smaller version (but horizontally-mounted) of heavy trucks' vertical stacks.

3. Ground clearance is not usually much of a problem ... but there's been a lotta scorched ankles and calves.
