From the first fill up on the new 04 Z16 i've had to have the engine running to activate the fuel door. Is this something changed for 04? Since Blackvette has told me in private message that his 03 Z doesn't need to be running to open his fuel door.

Blackvette also brought up if i were all the way out of gas, then how would i get the door open?

So any feed back on your Z's and especially the 04 models.

trying to figure out if i need to have this checked or if its a new safety measure put out by GM in the last year of the C5.

Thanks ahead of time.. now off to work.. i'll check in on this tonight

Excellent question!

This is an interesting question and I for one am stumped as to why the Z16 fuel door will not open up unless the engine is running!

Exactly, how would you fill the tank if you ran out of gas?

This post should be but up in the Z06 Technical Section as well. I will be glad to assist and put it up there for you as well.

Hope you get to the bottom of this.

I checked the owner's manual on this. There is nothing about the fuel door being opened when the engine is running. This is from a 2003 manual though. Check your 2004 manual.

However, on page 5-8 of the manual I am looking at it states the following along with a picture:

"If you fuel filler door release won't operate, there is a manual release tab. The tab is located against the upper trim on the driver's side in the rear compartment. Pull the tab to manually release the fuel filler door."

I have checked and I was unable to find any door release! It should be there right?

Unless there was a change for 2004, the fuel door should open while the car is non running. It sounds unsafe to be fueling with the engine running. Open the trunk and on the driver's side, behind the shock tower strut, black plastic shielding, you'll find the manual fuel filler door latch. It is on a wire and is rectangular in shape and marked accordingly.

Tony's Torch Help is on the way! Punk!

I am gonna recheck for that manual door opener.

Is it possible that this modification is for the CE Z16 only?????
Tonys Torch probably shuts off his engine once he opens the gas tank.
But why would it only open when the engine is on? If this is not suppose to happen, would it be some electical problem? Totally weird.....

OR, perhaps Tony's Torch is not strong enough to pull the lever!

:L

My sixer's fuel door will open either way and it does have the manual opening wire under the lid in the rear. Maybe your car is programmed to save you money from these ridiculous gas prices. Good luck on your problem! :)

Alright boyz,
A reading from the book of Corvette, 2004 edition, chapter 8, page 62.......

.....and on the seventh day God created the Corvette.....and he saw that it was good.....

oops....wrong book.....

the fuel filler door schematic reads like this:
Fuse #32 at the fuse block at the intrument panel is HOT all the time. IOW, if the fuse is good, Tony should have power to the little switch inside the console. Once the switch is pressed, power is routed to the fuel filler door actuator causing it to open. A ground is supplied on the other side of the actuator to splice pack 302 which is a multiple ground for several other accessories. It makes no sense that it works when running but won't when the car is off.......
That being said, the door should open whether or not the car is running. Tony should check for power at the switch with the car running, he should have voltage, then check with the car off, again voltage should be present. If he doesn't when it is off, he has a problem that the dealer needs to address.

Great find!

Well there you have it! Great work!!!!!

Get that car checked out!

Thankyou sir for this investigation into my fuel door. It will not open unless the car is running and then i turn it off after the door pops. The 02 Z opens properly with the engine off. The first fill up scared me because i was close to empty.. i didn't realize there was a panic or manuel rip cord.. Thankyou SO much for telling me this. I will have it checked because i thought something was either changed in two year from 02 to 04 or i wasn't getting any juice to the switch until the car was fired back up. I dont hear anything going on with the switch when the engine is turned off. and the last fill up i had to punch the button in the console three times for it to activate the fuel door.

Hope i didn't buy a LIMON.. ( BV i meant to spell it that way) so go play BOY;LOL

Tony,
The manual doesn't specify any diff between a Z and a regular Vette so that has me baffled. Once you have it checked out, I would love to know the fix. You learn, I learn!
What dealer did you get the car at? I got mine from Steakley and it has been a dream (except when a 16 yr old slammed into the rear).

See ya round the Big D, getting hot outside ain't it!

Thanks again 68Roadster

Hey didnt see your in Big D. do you ever go to Keller's on Sat. night off of Northwest Hwy? We cruize there on Sat nights and last Sat evening i had the SS out and this week its the Z16's turn to get out.

YEAH its getting hot already here isn't it? I bought my car as i do all of the at Huffines in Plano.. i've been dealing with a salesman for years there. never could get Steakley to deal on anything.. most of the salesmen there were young and didn't know Corvettes when i went by in the past. they told me once that Z06 had the runflats..and i left saying "screw them"..lol

see ya around love to see your cars..

Rip that fuel door open.

I wish Tony would run out of gas.

I would love to see him rip his fuel door open destroying it.

Tony doesn't have the brains to find the manual switch.

The manual release is a small steel cable with a black tab on the end with "fuel door release" on it.

On a FRC/Coupe: lean the driver's seatback forward, squat down, look up at the very top of the inside about 1-foot behind the Bose speaker and you will see the tab.

Inside the rear storage areas on each side you will also find just a steel cable without a tab that you can access from the drivers area if you crawl to the back. Pulling on these cables will release you trunk lid.

A new owner is needed for a Z16!

I wonder if this is the location in the Z06 as well. I will take a look.

I do hope the originator of this thread has run outta gas and he is stuck in the middle of nowhere and has to walk for hours.

Maybe someone will steal his Z06 while he seeks help and then resells it to a decent human being. :L

Can I use this on Tony's Torch as well?

Yes, this would be a good tool to use to "open up" the fuel door on a Z16 if the manual switch does not "open up" the door. It would certainly come in handy!

Just wondering if I could borrow this to "open up" Tony's Torch as well? I would like to perform some "repairs" on him and perhaps he would then be able to park better. Thanks.

:D

Mine came with one of them crowbar thingys... ...but I was wondering, which end do I insert in the crack?? :D

Arrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! NO. Don't do it. It will scratch the paint and ruin the release mechanism. What BV? Oh, a joke. Ok. Uh, S-TEE, never mind. LOL!!

BV must of been drinking again

Now that was kinda mean of BV to wish someone to STEAL my car.. WOW.. i think i will have to rethink what i might do to him now instead of breaking his nose, i may do more.

what do you guys think i should do to BV for wishing someone to steal my Z16??

Now that i know i have a rip cord i shall never run out of gas.. if i did i would back up to the fuel cell and give it a shot of REAL gas..

OH YEAH!!!

Chop shop he we come!

Wishing for your car to be stolen might have been a little harsh.

However, it will teach you a lesson.

Perhaps, the thief will return it to you if you promise to drive the car like a person.

If not, off to the chop shop it goes.
