Some I apply thread lock or some other sealant to the knock sensors when I put them back in the engine block?

Replacing the water pump today.

Proper performance if the KSes in any engine depends on good contact with the block so you don't use any sealer. In fact, some GM Service Manuals caution service techs to not use sealer.

use plumbers "pipe dope" (pipe thread sealing compound)...get a little tube at homie depot or such ....i prefer the kind with teflon additive

if there was no clearance between the male thread and the female it would be impossible to assemble...this same clearance space becomes a leak after installation....mechanical interfearence as the assembly is tightened will produce required electrical continuity

My Helms for my 95 says to not put any sealant on the sensor threads, as this will affect the sensors ability to pick up knocks. It further states that the sensors are coated at the factory. If you are re-installing the old sensors and the coating has been dsturbed, you might be able to use a very thin coat of some type sealant. I would try it first with nothing and see if it leaks. If it does then I might try a very little sealant.

I haven't used sealant and I have not had a problem with leakage. As mentioned before, the service manual specifially states NOT to use thread sealant. Torque to 14 ft/lbs.

Thanks guys for the replies!

Water pump is in and working great!!

Took me a long time, but I'm not a true mechanic.
