I want to remove my battery on my C-5 to make sure it is clean and acid free under it and maybe install one of those acid neutralizing mats under it; as well as clean the terminals. How can I make sure I don't loose any memory features when I remove it? I thought I could leave my Battery Tendor hooked-up to the terminals but that might be rough. :duh Should I be concerned about this or not? Any information on this would be very much appreciated.

:confused Also I have never had the collum lock re-call done and have had no problem should I worry about this or not?

Thanks,

Bill :w

I plugged in a 9 volt battery into my cigarette lighter to retain my memory. I think it cost 5 bucks for the connection. I also replaced my battery with an Ultima yellow top so I am assured that I won't have problems.

As far as the recall. I had my steering column lock done 2 years ago and have had problems subsequently. Am going to go back for the new recall as that it will fix the potential problem with the type of gas you use too. There is nothing worse than being stuck with your baby miles away from home. It happened to me twice and that is no way to impress a woman.

imho, get it done

Battery Disconnect/vrs. Memory Deletation???

:confused I have seen these 9 volt cigarette lighter adapters in magazines but some of them say they do not work with the C-5 only C-4s and older; do you know if this is true or not? :cry Hate to erase a bunch of crap and have to deal with restoring and resetting and I didn't know if it would effect the ECM or not. What would be effected by disconnecting the battery do you know? :duh

Thanks, and HAPPY HOLIDAYS

From what I recall on the other forum, the C5 retains everything without the 9volt unit..
might do a search over there at CorvetteForum.com (unless someone here agrees)

:upthumbs That would be nice, I had heard both ways so I didn't know for sure. Wanted to make sure before I disconnected the terminals from the battery.:confused Is there anyone out there like c4c5 specialist that could shed some light on this for me?

Thanks and HAPPY HOLIDAYS,
Bill :w

It worked for me. It took me 30 minutes to replace my old delco with the Ultima, no memory was lost.

Bill,

I've disconnected the battery before too, with no settings lost. I think it was disconnected for about an hour.

Tammy

Thanks

Thank you all very much I feel comfortable in disconnecting everything now. We are snow bound here in northern Indiana clear down to the southern tip for the most part. Could get out but there are between 8 to 10" of snow on the ground and it is still snowing and blowing; so it is one of those days if you don't have to your better off staying home! Looks like Christmas for sure but I can do without it. . . . .any snow in the Carlolinas Tammy?

WISH YOU ALL HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

Bill :w

Hey Bill,
I don't know about snow in the Carolinas, but here in GA all we have is low 40's and a steady, chilly rain. I'd love to see 10" of snow in the ground... I think I've seen it once that deep in all my 41 years in GA.

It sounds like the pefect weather for those garage projects, as long as you've got heat in there!

Tammy,

I meant Georgia, don't know why I said the Carolinas; guess maybe becasue that is where I've thoguht about retireing!!! If you got to get out in this while crap all the time it sucks! If you can look at it through the window of a warm house or garage it is pretty. And my garage is heated, the Vette is covered and warm; if I could get it in the bedroom it would be with me in there. My wife I'm sure would have a problem with that, but ? Still snowing and blowing here, looks like a white Christmas, the roads should be at least in good shape by then.
Are you ready for old Saint Nick at your house? I wanted a new leather Corvette jacket, but who knows, other than that I pretty much buy what I want.

Take care and MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY,

Bill :w

I did exactly what you asked about. I disconnected the battery (both terminals) removed the battery and put an absorbent mat under it. No battery tender, no 9v thingy...nothin'. Replaced the battery and reconnected the terminals. The elapsed time was about 5 minutes...didn't loose anything!

Thanks Dave, I expect by the time I clean around the battery box, I also want to put in one of those absorbant mats it will take around 30 minutes but if you didn't have a problem this shouldn't be any problem either. :confused Any idea how long you can keep the battery out of it without loosing any of the memory features?

Thanks again and HAPPY HOLIDAYS,

Dave,
thanks for trying it out in "real time" for us and reporting back!

I still have the ticking time bomb of a stock battery in mine..
will replace with a yellow Optima after Christmas.

:) Rain is your 2000 Coupe with a 6-speed the yellow one in your Avatar? And is that your wife leaning on it or a model you hired? Now I have another question for you since you have a 2000 Coupe, mine is black same year. Does your drivers seat have any wear on the outside seat bolster? Mine has some wear there from getting in and out and I have also heard from others that this is a common thing. I was thinking about having just this section replaced have you had an experience with this at all? Is the Optima battery suppose to be the best for a Corvette. I have always been a stickler for keeping everything stock as it came from the factory. :confused Has there been reported problems with putting back a new original Delco battery? Anyone else that wish to comment on this would be welcomed as well.

Thanks and HAPPY HOLIDAYS,

Bill :w

Hey Bill

yes, the girl in my avatar is my ex wife and we are still currently lovers. She works in the mayor's office of my hometown and we were highschool sweethearts who just got married too soon.

JUST KIDDING

From what I'm told, shes a european porn star. I do have the rest of the set from that photoshoot on the yellow C5. if you want em, email me:

warning, she gets nekkid in the pics.... :D

Matter of fact, my 2000 is black too. its the one in my signature. (and here)
http://www.rainontheinternet.com/Corvette/c5webshow/index.htm

I have a slight bit of wear on the bolster. I am told this is a common thing.
Either have it re-dyed, put a cover on the seat such as the wet suit ones from
http://www.wetokole.com/
or another vendor, or I guess that part of the seat could be replaced by a local interior shop.

The Optima is a gel battery instead of a liquid based one. So it will not leak and I believe can be mounted in several positions. (like my avatar girl) ;)
The stock C5 Delco battery was known to crack and leak. Not in all a bad thing, as there is a nice catch tray below the battery that directs all battery acid out of the engine compartment.
Alas, from 97-2000, this was directed directly into the Corvette's computer and main wiring harness.

The newer AC Delco batteries are designed not to leak.
but I want to be safer than sorry. Going with the Optima for a bit more $$$.

Good luck
Rain

Hi Bill,

I'm not sure. I have read some other threads in the past that indicate that the memory will hold for at least an hour. I didn't have any real cleaning to do when I installed the battery mat. I just wiped away some dust...It was virtually spotless under the battery. It is the original battery and as I read, I am wondering if I should be nervous about it. What exactly is the issue?? I use a Battery Sentinal when the car is stored over the winter and when the day comes to replace the battery, I will put in an Optima Yellowtop as well.

An unashamed and unappoligetic Merry Christmas to you all!!!

Dave

Thanks Dave, my battery is the original Delco as well and I use a Battery Tendor when I have it in storeage; but thought it was already going on 5 years old so I thought maybe I should replace it before I have problems on a trip or something. At anyrate that would be my concern as well with the ECM and related wiring sets right under the battery tray. Thanks for the info and I too may decide to go with the gel type battery just to be sure of no leaks.

I want to send you and your family a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS, and A VERY HAPPY, HEALTHY NEW YEAR with another 10,000,000,000,000 more to come.

Battery issues

Hi guys.

I ran smack dab into the battery nightmare a month or two ago. I posted info about it in a thread from a fella that was Corvette shopping and wanted to know what to look at during pre-purchase inspection.
The battery had been previously replaced in my '98 I purchased last summer. There were no outward signs of a problem, but when I had an incident involving my TAC module, it was discovered by the dealership that I had battery acid on my BCM, TAC module, wiring harness AND pooled in the fenderwell. They painted a very bleak and alarming picture and recommended that I replace everything mentioned above to the tune of $3400. I took the car to my regular Corvette mechanic (who had sent me to the dealership because he thought the TAC module would come under warranty) and he checked it out himself. He disputed the dealership claim almost completely. He said there were signs of the past leak but that the dealership had exaggerated the damage and replacement of the above mentioned items was unnecessary. He cleaned and neutralized everything, installed a catch tray beneath my battery, replaced my TAC module - all for $400 and sent me on my way.

So the moral of this story is - if you've got an old Delco battery that's making you nervous, replace it. And like Rain said, there's alot of valuable equipment under there.

BTW I filed a complaint with mama GM customer service against the dealership. The lady I talked to was very nice and very helpful. She registered my car in my name so that I would be directly contacted by GM for any future recalls or safety issues, and sent me a letter for a free oil and filter change and transmission service at a GM dealership of my choosing. You can bet it won't be the former one.

GM Customer Service number is 1-800-222-1020. I'm glad I called because she told me there were 2 open recalls on my car. The column lock recall and a lap belt recall. The column lock recall has been done but apparently the paperwork wasn't completed. She told me that the dealership would inspect it and confirm that it had been completed and then sign off on it. I'm going to get it taken care of after the holidays.

Sorry this got so long but there wasn't a short way to explain my position.

Happy holidays to all!

The road is waiting for you.

JAG,

Did you replace your battery with the gel type what is it called the Optima or did you stay with the OEM Delco?:r Not that I am having any problem but they get to be almost 5 years old it would probably be a good ideal to replace it don't you think?

What year was yours and I assume it was the original battery, right? Or did this happen before you owned the car?

Thanks,
Bill :w
