I have a small cut in the boot on the driver side rear axel. I am confused about what will need to be replaced when I pull the axel out to replace it with a new one (just to get a new cv boot)?

Do I need to worry about replacing any differential fluid? What about seals/o-rings?

I read a lot about leaky seals and such in the diff. case, is this something that I will need to worry about when changing the axel out?

Any good resources out there on replacing an axel on a C5?

Hi there,
If you are removing an axle, you will loose some differential fluid.
The GM axle boot kit will have all the instructions necessary to perform the repair.
It should take about 4 hours to do it with hand tools.

That is funny you reference a "GM axle boot kit" as my dealership denies the existence of such a thing and insists that the entire axle be replaced.

Which is what I had another shop do for about 1/5 the price they wanted.

This is my last GM. I love my car, but cannot deal with service (or lack thereof).

Thanks for all of your assistance, not just on this topic but you have also provided great feedback to me on various issues in the past. If you ever find yourself in Tampa drop me a line, I'll buy you a beverage of your choice.

you will ?????

I had this much off my 2002 and not one drop of diff fluid was removed:

and it won't take this amount of disassembly to replace just one boot.

to change the boot, there is no reason to get inside the carrier.
