Hey guys
I'm on the cusp of gettign my vette. Looks like itll be a 80. I dont liek surprises so i called our insurance company to get a quote. amount has gone up for some reason ( i thnk its because we have 2 cars and this wudl be three and my parents cant say im not the primary dirver on any of them---i just turned 19---so i may get rid of the 2nd car (mine)) Anyway, they only offer liability. no collision or comprehensive, i dont even know if there is SUM in there.
I've been looking through the portal and all of the insurance companies want under 5,000 miles or so. That may fit me because i'm in college and the 120mi trip home is done maybe 10 times per year, so thats liek 2,500 miles, but that leaves me with only 2,500 for my 4 month summer---no good!
Basically i was wondering what solutions you guys have. I know alot fo you drive your cars around alot and even commute in them. I don't want to have to remove the distributor or something to 'discourage' theft every time i park, and thats ignoring the potential accident.
Please keep in mind im 19, so no "must be 25" things. my home is in NYC, but i go to school in Philadelphia. I am a good, calm driver, i have good grades and i've taken driver's ed (10%) and i would be willing to take any other classes to lower my rates.
thanks in advance.

Tom,

Sneed will require you to be 25 to write the policy.

You most likely will not be able to qualify for the specialty coverage as most need you to be 25, and the car has to be garaged where the main daily driver is registered....and also has to be where you live.

Since you are away at college however, you have a "get out of jail free card" for the next couple of years. In other words, usually it simply needs to be registered at your parents, under your parents name, and you listed as the driver, and coverage will extend to you while in school.

You should seek out "normal" daily driver insurance on the car since it will be exposed to loss, and a higher degree at that, since you will have it with you at school.

Call around to everybody. It will have to be in your parents name though (title) to have them qualify on it with you a driver and with it away at college with you.

I'm very confused, or at least slightly. I currently have a 90 corolla (hey, it was free from a relative) that is titled and registered to my dad. I called the insurance company on my dad's behalf to get a quote on the vette. They had no problem insuring it even with me as the primary driver.
Many of these companies seem to require 25yrs or older for the owner/main driver. My parents would have no problem putting that as themselves. But i dont want to leave the car at home. I have access to a locked and guarded garage here at upenn, so i'm not especially worred about theft, but if i get into an accident, there goes my investment.
I really don't understand how all this works. The companies had absoluely no trouble charging my parents 2 grand for me to get on the policy when i got my license for their brand new car, yet they wont be happy to charge me more for a less valuable car, years later?
Maybe I'll ask stallion, hes like 18 right?

Addition: I also remember that when i was considering a 99 coupe, they also once again had little problems putting the car on the policy with me asa driver. A more expensive and arguably more dangerous car.
I wish there was some kind of super-road test to show i dont drive like the baseline 19 year old, and I plan on enjoying the beuaty of my ride without racing or (excessively) speeding. Once again, nt to mention the car will be used psaringly until the summer.
