figured that someone else has had the same problem along the way and would be quick to answer this one. i have an automatic 78 pace car. i need to change out the gearshift "ball" as it is the original one and copmletely discolored and very old looking. i know that the reverse lockout chrome button unscrews, and the spring it exposes pulls out, but that's as far as i seem to be able to get. the "ball" doesn't seem to want to unscrew (just my logical conclusion as to what should happen, lol). i looked but it was a bit dark in the garage and i didn't see anything else that needed to be done. i figured it should unscrew. the question.........what's the trick to getting the original knob off???
thanks in advance for the help.

The ball should unscrew also. Maybe some used loctite on it?

Just put some tape over it! ;LOL

thanks. i thought it was supposed to screw off, but i wasn't about to "muscle" it until i found out i was right. since i'm restoring the interior, and that's one of the items that needs replacement, i figured i would pipe wrench it as a last resort (and when the frustration level reached near max, lol). just something else to deal with this weekend, however. i appreciate all the help.

If replacing, I don't advise the pretty metal one....

I got one, not being real bright - forgot about sun and Dallas and seared flesh and such....;LOL
