Rear end cover leaking.

After not being able to drive my car most of last year because of the optispark and ECM now the rear end is leaking bad!. I've driven it for about 3 months.I must say I am getting very , very disappointed in the corvette quality.

Anybody have any idea how long it takes to replace the differential cover gasket on a 92 ? Oh did i sayit's got 37k miles on it.
I'm pretty certain it's going to be SOLD after I fix this issue!

I accidently posted this in the general area I didn't know ho to move it so i just copied it here.

There is no gasket used in this area. A silicone sealer is used in place of a gasket.

Have you checked the fill & drain plugs to see if they are the culprits. Resealing the third member involves quite a bit of component removal to get it out for cleaning/resealing.

I have never tried it while it was mounted on the vehicle, only while it was out of the car for gear ratio changes, etc. They normally never leak unless the vehicle has bottomed out hard! Any evidence of scraping or cracks on the bottom?

Good Luck.

Relax PCI, one oil leak, no reason to sell, after all 37k the really has no miles for a 92, maybe the silicone dried out due to lack of use.

As for the Optispark, well, we all know the issues there, and never , never, wash the engine with water.

Nah the car was fine a week ago the last time I drove it. Its dripping ALOT right from the bottom of the housing. I first noticed it at a light on the way home from work I could smell burning oil. The leak is dripping right onto the exhaust.
The book says it can be done in the car but it sounds like a lot of work again. I'll park it early AGAIN and fix it this winter.
I dont think its cracked , i havent hit anything ever.
I'm going to jack it up tomorrw and get a better look. Today i was just so disgusted with it I didn't want to look at it.
Thanks for the input....

It's been a while since I've been on this forum. Many projects and not enough time! But i think I caught up enough to pull the vette back into the gargage this weekend.

How long of a process is it to remove the carrier cover?
Also after a closer look at the manual , can I just leave the rear carrier in place and just remove the differential itself? That way i wont have to remove all the suspension components?

Bob

Take a close look,
  • Leaf spring
  • Strut rods
  • Support rods
All of this has to be detached in order to remove the cover, they all attach to it.

Well I crawled under my vette and took a gander at the source of the leak,,,It's actually the left yoke seal leaking. At first I thought yes ! I don't have to drop the carrier! until I read the book ,,,,I still have to drop pretty much the entire cover...ect,,ect... LOL These things have to be the most fun to drive but poorly designed cars I have ever had the "privilege" of owning...

I'll get the parts tomorrow and start tearing it apart friday evening...

Anybody offer any short cuts...???

LOL

Bob,

Why so hard on Corvettes, that car has been sat, 37k in 13-14 years, that's probably the reason it's leaking everything is dried out.

I have 137,000 miles on my 86 and the rear is great.

You have a great low wear car, I bet the interior is fantastic, as well as the body.

Mart

Mart, your right basically the int. exterior is in great shape. But my issue is that I waited 20 plus years to get my dream car and it only had 17k miles on it , only to have it break down everytime I drive it. But what gets me even more is that when it does break it major surgery to repair.

Come on you do have to admit that pulling the entire rear end to replace a seal is a very bad design.
The things that have broke are,
1) optispark 3 times! and yes I used new ones 1st one was my fault, i washed motor. And I checked/replaced timing cover seals each time.Water pump wasn't leaking.
2) Cd player just up and quit, then the speakes started popping.
3) replaced or repaired the seat pump/bladders twice.
4) The ECM quit (luckily in my drive way)
5) Replaced Rear wheel bearings.
6) Now I have to remove the whole rear end for a $12 seal.

So yes I am very disappointed with the over all poor design and quality of the car.

Now mind you I dont really drive the car everyday, but I do drive it frequently.i have put 20k on it in just under 4 years, I would have alot more if I COULD drive it..LOL

I have an 88 Fiero formula that has a better track record than this and it sits ALL the time!
I'm going to call the local dealer to see how much it would be for them to perform the work as I don't have the time for this kind of repair again! I just spent a week rebuilding the upper end of my stepsons Fiero ( he likes to over rev..)Hopefully it wont be too bad. If it is very $$$ i'll do the work over the next week or so.

I'm still a vette fan , just at this point a very disappointed one! I did take my Fiero out lastnight!

Bob

I hear ya man,

The rear bearings is probably time as well. The Opti, well that is a really poor design.

Best of luck
Mart

Update on leaking differential, this is quite long!

I finally got around to doing something with my Corvette 5 weeks ago! I didn’t have the time to repair it myself. So I called the local chevy dealer in Manchester to get a ball park estimate to fix the leak. They quoted around 450 to 500 including consumables. I didn’t think that was too bad .. so I made an appointment to get it fixed by them.
Dobles Chevrolet in Manchester NH took it in on July 6th to be work on. ( It is still there today!)We both thought it would be a simple seal replacement costing around 500.00, but with my continuing great luck with this vette,, it was not to be that easy or cheap. When they got around to disassembling the rear end they found the left inner axle is pretty much trashed! The end was mostly ground off! The right axle was really still usable, but not optimal as it had a wear ring around where the seal contacts the axle. The best part GM stopped manufacturing the axles and is no longer available! It took them weeks to find a replacement left axle.

During this time frame the service advisor at Dobles was asking if I knew were to find the other axle. What he conveyed to me at the time was he needed the left axle as the right one was found. I did some searching online and found a company that claimed to have them at not only a reasonable price $199.00 each but they were in stock. I called them right away and placed an order for the left axle. I also explained me dilemma of how my car is at the dealer on lift and has been there for 2 weeks now. So I need to get these as fast as I can. He assured me (this is all happening On Friday the 15th of July ) in their words “they are in stock ready to ship and is on its way to you from Indiana as we speak”. So I return to the dealer to tell him to hold on installing the axle “left “axle back in as I have one on it’s way. Well he told me he needed the left axle, no he actually needs the right axle! AHHHhhhhhHHh! I zipped back home and called the company back and told him I need the right axle too, same promise I will have both axles by Wed the 20th of July (he didn’t say what year.)

To shorten this up ,, I still don’t have the axles from vettepartsonline in Florida. I called several times to find were they are.. All I got was excuses as to why they aren’t here.

1st call to them on Wed the 20th was “oh they were in stock but needed to be remanufactured, that didn’t happen until Monday. They were shipped Monday.” Ok fine.

2nd call on Friday the 22nd ..”Ya they really weren’t really in stock as we thought. They went out on Wed.”

3rd call on Wed the 27th (dobles is now getting very upset and wants car off lift) “ hmm they shipped out , to Manchester NY on Friday….let me look into it get back to you this afternoon..” ( No calls at all from them even on Thursday)

4th call on Friday “Yup we found them and they have been rerouted back to you. It looks like they were sent to you requiring a signature. Nobody was there to sign so they came back to us.” I have never heard of UPS or Fedex come to my house or anybody’s house with package requiring a signature that went right back after 1 attempt, besides my stepdaughter has been home babysitting all summer. She never saw anybody try to deliver any packages, period.

In my desperation to get parts ASAP and they sounded convincing ( My weak moment) I sent a check to them ASAP. Bad move on my part, from now on if they don’t take plastic, they don’t get my business, PERIOD.

I’ve sent them emails asking for tracking information status ect.. No responses at all!
So beware of this company!!

My next step is to call the attorney general in Fla. about company..the better business bureau, and whatever else I can do. Any suggestions ?

At this point it looks like I may get ripped off for 420.00!!

Oh and my vette ,sadly is still at dobles on the lift 5 weeks after I dropped it off for service.

BTW , when I get the car back it’s going on Ebay! 1992 Quasar blue ragtop with 37k miles.. I’m spending my money on a 1969 firebird convertible!
Bob

Your selling your vette for an even older F-body? Reading your post the cause of your frustration is not the car it was shoddy, troubleshooting from the dealer and an unscrupulous parts provider. I wish you luck because I used to drive/work on 1960s early 70s cars and an LT1 C4s reliability is light years ahead of the 1960s F-bdody. I put a Dana 44 in my 95 and it was a simple proceedure that took me two days because I replaced all of my bushings and u-joints at the same time.

Once again Good luck with the F-body.

Mike

I'm going to use the money to restore a bird that i have, not go buy one.

Anybody ever hear of vettepartsoline.com ????

Bob

Well I would take action against the company. As for your car, sorry to hear about your luck. I never trust the dealer for anything, and harldy ever send payment for something unless it is on plastic.

I have a 73 Trans Am and it is a fun car, however it is not a car that I could get in and drive everyday. I bought the car in very good condition. I have had to rebuild the carb, removed the points, replaced the master cylinder, replaced the starter, headliner fixed, oh and the electrical issues I have yet to figure out.

The car is great, but not a daily driver like the vette should be. Not sure what the problem is with your vette, maybe you should contact GM. Perhaps the previous owner was a little hard on it.

Well i picked up my car lastnight ,finally..$1450.00!! They orginally quoted me 1700.00 because they had to R+R the axles twice..NOT! Well I get home and look at it and lo and behold the spare is dangling below the rear end just barely holding on by a few threads !! great workmanship! but it is not leaking! I asked the "service advisor " if they road tested it ,I got a real nice blank stare. Um gee I um I don't think he did... So this week i'm composing a letter to GM corp. about the service at that dealership.. 3 timesI have encountered this high level of service! I know it wont do much but i'll feel a little better...

So next is clean it up ,take pix, advertise locally and on ebay...
