Two quick questions.

First do I use sealant around the diff cover gasket? If so, can someone recommend a sealant type that has worked for them.

Second, Any recommend type of Fluid that goes in the rear diff? Can I use synthetics?

Thanks for any and all help.

I personally would use a little permatex #2 to hold the gasket in place when installing. Fluid replacement would consist of GM# 1052271 (qty 2) and 1052358 (qty 1).

I just changed my diff fluid and made sure the cover and housing were free of any hint of old gasket material. I dried the case and cover with brake clean and installed a genuine factory gasket "WITHOUT" a dab of any liquid out of a tube or tin. I placed two bolts in the cover and then put the gasket against the cover and over the two bolts. I then threaded the bolts in a few turns and replaced the remaining bolts, making sure I saw each paper hole line up with the cover. I never, ever use any sealent on paper gaskets.....always install dry!
It's been over a week and I park the car in the garage. Not one leak do I see on the floor, or a sweat of grit around the case from oil seepage.
You won't hurt using synthetic. Just make sure if this is an automatic with diff/slip system, you add the extra little bottle that should be used for the clutch packs in the ring housing. This additive helps the little clutches from chattering around corners.

Gasket type

Ok I will have to look at the gasket type. My old cover was cracked at the spring and since I was going to be under there and had other things to do I am actually re-doing the entire rear end with a kit from VBP. So I am not sure what kind of gasket they sent me, but I will take a look. If it is paper I will leave it dry, if it is a FelPro or something like that I will throw some permatex on it.

Thanks again for the help.
