Help....heard rattling from my rear research online and the suggested fix was a fluid flush and fill of rear diff fluid in my c6. ...when unit was flushed pieces of aluminum came out with fluid...put new fluid in and car nolonger rattling and seems to run normal. ...what does this mean....

Well, first off Welcome to CAC! :w We have a great many, very qualified, people here to help you. Unfortunately, I'm not one of those. All I can do is make comments...unqualified comments. :L But your situation doesn't sound good to me. Pieces of aluminum coming out doesn't sound like it's a good thing. But I will defer to the experts here.

C4C5specialist.......LLC5....dadaroo you guys around?

How big were the pieces of metal debris and do you know if they were were magnetic (pieces of metal that will cling to a magnet)?

Pieces are not magnetic...and the sizes are like the size of half a chocolate chip and smaller

Half the size of a chocolate chip is a large size particle to be floating around in your differential. It sounds like something came apart and the diff needs to be disassembled to determine what happened. Was there any previous work done to the vehicle before the differential rattling noise happened, and was there a lot of old differential fluid that came out when you changed it, or do you think the fluid level may have been low previous to draining?

I just had a new tremec installed .......not sure about the fluid amount I pd for a flush and fill at the dealership and that's the debris they gave me that came out.....fluid may have been low as I am not the original owner...I have driven her the fluid change and everything SEEMS normal and no more rattling ...im wonder if I should replace the ring and pinion or no

Ok, lets back up a bit. 1) Why was the Tremec installed, and did the dealership that changed the diff fluid also replace the Tremec? 2) Who diagnosed the bad Tremec? 3) When did you notice the rattling noise you described in you original post, before or after the Tremc install?

OK SO TREMEC WAS REPLACED BY DLRSHIP I PURCHASED FROM DUE TO A BLOWN TRANS COOLANT LINE (NOT THE STEEL OEM) BUT WAS CRIMPED AND REPLACED WITH RUBBER HOSE (PRIOR TO ME OWNING IT) SO OF COURSE THE TREMEC BURNS UP DUE TO LOSS OF FLUID AND WAS REPLACED BY THE SAME DLRSHIP NOT GM, I WENT A STEP FURTHER AND HAD THE SHOTTY MECHANIC WRK RE DONE WITH FACTORY OEM STEEL TRANS COOLANT LINES BY GM DLRSHIP....2 GM DLRSHIP DIAG THE BAD TREMEC BUT DID NOT REPLACE IT THE DLR I BOUGHT IT FROM DID. DIFF FLUID CHANGED BY GM DLR, WHILE IN A DRIVE THRU AND FEELING RESISTANCE WHILE IN FIRST GEAR SO I IMMEDIATELY PARKED AND HAD IT TOWED TO THE SAME GM DLR THAT REPLACED MY TRANS COOLANT LINES AND THEY COULDN'T FIND A PROBLEM OR ANY LEAKS AT FIRST .THIS IS AFTER THE DLR STTD SHE WAS TREADY TO GO AND NVR MENTIONED ANY RATTLING IN THE REAR AFTER ADDITIONAL INSPECT
.WHEN I PICKED UP MY CAR I HEARED THE NOISE B4 I LFT THE DLRSHIP PARKING LOT.(CAR NOT MKING THAT NOISE B4 I DROPPED HER OFF)...SO AFTER I REQUESTED TO FLUSH THE REAR DIFFERENT FLUID AND REPLACE WITH THE NEWER GM FLUID I RCVD A CALL WITH PICTURES OF METAL THAT CAME OUT WHILE THE OLD FLUID DRAINING AND WAS INFORMED THE REAR DIFF IS DOEN AND 4200 TO REPLACE IT ...I HAD THE DLRSHIP ADD NEW FLUID AND PICKED UP THE CAR AND DROVE HER HOME (NO NOISE ) AND HAVEN'T DRIVEN HER SINCE....3 AFTER TREMEC INSTALL

Ok, so 2 different GM dealerships worked on your vehicle. One GM dealership diagnosed a bad transmission, and the other GM dealership replaced the transmission since they sold the vehicle to you with a bad transmission. The reason I am asking is that the metal in your differential is not normal, and driving it without fluid or low fluid level can destroy it. Something caused the metal to fatigue and break off. The only way to know for sure what happened is to disassemble the differential and closely look for causes. Good luck with it. :)

Beginning to sound like somebody, someplace, owes you a rearend rebuild. This is too much of a coincidence......:ugh

Yeah, the more history that comes out a lot more questions arise. If I were the OP I would do a complete history check of the vehicle if possible for accident or flood damage, the damaged cooler lines have me wondering how they got that way. At the very least I would say that the selling dealer did not inspect the vehicle very closely.

the response I recvd was the oem trans lines wouldn't fit due to the aftermarket headers installed (b4 I owned it) this is coming from the non gm dlrship I bought it from that installed the new tremec. So after 30days+ of having my vehicle to replace a quoted "stage 3 transmission that was so hard to find" for my c6....the rubber hose mechanic wrk was done again but this time with a longer hose stemming just beyond the battery all the way back to the transmission....so in fear of further damaging the c6 and incarceration I took the car to a certified gm dlrship to have the tranny coolant lines replaced properly which was a pretty penny.....it seems to me that the shotty mechanic wrk was due to not wanting to drop the exhaust (billy boat I believe) to properly install the proper coolant lines...because the rubber lines were barley 2 inches away from the header

At least you know why the lines were installed incorrectly, that's good.

Have you talked to the selling dealer about your diff?
