Rear differential seals

Can anyone help I want to change my seals on my rear ,the unit is removed from the car . the forward one is the leaker but would like to change them all

Yes,long story but I didnt want to have to redisassemble everything to do it.

The front pinion seal can be changed on the car but you have to mark the nut/pinion so the nut goes back in the same position. If you don't the bearign preload will be off and you'll end up removing the differential to replace the bearings. THe side yoke seal can only be changed with the unit out of the car, you have to remove the side yokes first they are held in by a snap ring on the end of each one. If it's not leaking badly I'd leave it alone otherwise I rather remove the unit and fix out of the car for a better chance of repair.

Lets see, marking the nut /pinion has me alittle confused ,Am I looking to count the turns ,the preload is the part I'm confused with.. The side yokes after I remove the snap ring will the come out or do I need a puller...

Len,

Just mark the nut and shaft with a punch so that when you re torque it, after replacing the seal, the marks line back up.
There is a crush ring inside the differential that establishes the backlash between the ring and pinion gear. If you torque it past the marks that were made, the backlash will decrease.
