Is the only way to flush out and drain the rear end, remove mono spring and rear end cover, or is there any other way that would be quick and painless. I don't see any other way. Also any recommedations on fluids. ;help

Get a hand pump at you local auto parts store and pump the old fluid out thru the fill fitting. It also comes in handy filling the diff back up.

I just use regular GM or Delco fluid.... should take 2 bottles plus 1.5 bottles of additive.

thanks for the get backs if I use synthetic oil do I need the additive

Depends! Redline has a Synthetic that they say doesn't need the additive (others may also). I use Mobil 1 Gear (very easy to find) and One bottle of GM Posi Additive in mine - been runnin' smooth for over 2 years now.

I have a few friends who warned me not to use synthetic, purely because it leaks on older gaskets. If you are replacing your gasket... you are good. If you are just draining and filling... you may be suseptable to leakage (I underline may because you could also be fine... I'm not saying it will leak, just that it might, and has for some of my friends).

One of the best investments I made when I started this project is a...
Mityvac Fluid Evacuator

Got mine at Northern Tool. Took a little while to suck that 30 year old diff goop out, but it was easy and no major tools involved other than the rachet to remove the filler plug. I have used it on the old and trans as well.

when you used it on the tranny did it come with a small enough hose to go into the dipstick tube???

Hi,

Sure did. Comes with one large hose that goes into the top of the pump and two smaller ones that connect with a rubber adapter. The small one is thin and long enough to drain the tran no problem.

For a full drain, you will fill the evacuator twice. Once on the first attempt. When it is about full, you will think you are done becuase it will stop pulling fluid. You are not. Wait a day for the rest of the fluid to drain down to the pan. Then you will draw enough to almost fill it again!

After doing this, when I dropped the pan to replace the filter, there was only about 1 or 2 oz of fluid left.

Without the evacuator and no drain plug on the trans, that would be a mell of a hess!
