I'm making preparation to have my rear main seal replaced, is there anything else I should look to replace while the transmission is out of the vehicle?

Manual or Auto ?

If the tranny is out, you might as well change the filter and fluid. Maybe the external seals, as the are only a few dollars at a transmission shop.
Are you sure it's the rear seal that needs replacing? I was a 100% sure mine was leaking but it was the rear or the intake.

Good luck,

Thanks for the reply Gordon. I just had the intake manifold seals replaced and the transmisson serviced. This afternoon I took it to my alternate mechanic (I'm beginning to doubt the chevy dealers assessment) and he say's its the oil dipstick tube. Oil only seems to on the starter and surrounding brake lines on the passenger side. Going to have the underbody steam cleaned and will run some oil dye to be sure that is not a rear main seal. Thanks

Ed

Your dipstick grommet is the likely culpret. I had to do mine, quick, easy fix. Your GM dealer would have likely fixed it then charged you for a new seal at $500. So go have a :beer

Knowledge

Sir: First things first, purchase manuals for your year and model of Corvette, secondly, know that everything on a vette is repairable and once you go into a project and let other vette owners know, you will be surprised at all the information they will give you and help will be on its way. The first project I tackled was a 1976 wrecked Vette, had to put a new frame, front end clip, fiberglass work and really didn't know how to get started. I ask questions, read books, and after two boxes of cigars,(it really took me three boxes) I completed the job. The only thing I had going for me was tools and my three car garage at home. Go for it.

Thanks for the advice everyone. It in fact turned out to be to worn diptsick as the source of my oil leak. Recommendation, always get a second opinion unless your mechanic is a personal friend or relative.
