Question: rear main seal

Have a 79 L-82. Was wondering if the rear crank seal is one piece or a two piece seal. Mine is leaking and in need of repair.

And if not replaced correctly,it will continue to leak..There is a fix..

When you replace it use an aftermarket seal because it is made to run in a different place on the crank.

When you replace it use an aftermarket seal because it is made to run in a different place on the crank.

DO NOT assume that all aftermarket seals ride on a different place on the rear jorunal.

A lot of replacement rear main seals will be mfg. to GM specifications.

You may need to search for a rear main seal which is designed specifically for that purpose, ie: moving the sealing surface on the crank journal away from a previously worn portion.
