I'm replacing my rear main seal and I was just curious. Was the original 1 or 2 piece? The one I'm replacing is 2 piece and I was wondering if it had ever been done before.

Thanks

Two piece, the one piece seal came around 87 or 88 and is quite different from what you have.

Push the top piece about an 8th to 3/16ths of an inch up beyond the bearing housing surface....this will drop the opposite side down the same amount...Do a mirror image on the second piece...put sealant on the four matching surfaces and assemble. Doing this makes a better seal, and doesn't match the seal and the matting surfaces in a straight line.

Thanks all for the helpful input, I didn't think about the offset.

I have just done my seal, but I still have a leak.
I am going back under on the week end. I think the seal is OK, but the sump gasket is leaking somewhere.

Oh well, back to check it out, we maust have left something out. The Felpro instructions said no sealant on the one peice seal, but I may dab a bit on this time if the rear seal is not the culprit.

Your seal:
They are really easy to get out and put back in. Take the oil pan and pick up off, take the main bearing cap off to get to it.
Tap one end and the seal will spin so you can grab it with a pair of pliers. Clean all the faces and add sealant to the two corner faces after your feed the seal back in. Re tension the main bearing cap, install the oil pick up and the oil pan.
Really easy job, but take your time.

Cheers

Just want to add one more tip.

OK, got under yesterday and found the source of the leak, well I think so.

Both the front and rear seals were dry with no oil, but the Felpro one peice gasket was leaking.
In the instructions, Felpro recommends on NOT using sealant on the gasket. I would go against this as it is the reason the gasket leaked.
I reinstalled the gasket with some Lock-Tite hi temp sealer, you know the red stuff that gets everywhere!
Well so far it is as dry as a bone under the Vette.

Cheers

Tony
