Hey, I have a 1976 stingray. As you all know, no rear speakers =( Don't want a typical box because I do want to put my t-tops in back. I can mount two rear speakers. But, I do see in the new Ecklers catalogue, page 77 they have a custom box for 1968-1982 vettes. The box pressure fits between the rear wheel wells... Do any of you have these? I am curious if the box goes all the way back to the gas tank... If it does, then you could through an amp in there, and T-tops on top with no problem at all. I can call them up, but we all know how good customer service people are. So, if you any of you have them, would love to hear from ya. Thanks

I've got a '75 L-48 convertible, so my cargo area space may be slightly different than yours, but even with the convertible top folded down in there there's plenty of room for my 'custom boom box' purchased through Eckler's. fits nicely between the wheel wells flush with the back of the cargo area, relatively low profile, has a great sound (once I added an amp to boost the bass).

Cool. The speakers that it came with had nice sound? Also, is there room inside the box for the amp?

The speakers that came with it sound just fine to me. You could probably get some more expensive speakers, but if you're adding an amp, too, you should get decent response from the ones that come with it. if you don't like them they'd be easy to replace. don't know how big your amp is, but it should fit in the box if you want to put it there. mine's hidden behind the dash on the passenger side (removed dash panel, mounted amp on fabbed bracket behind dash).

...here's a (low res) pic of the cargo area with the boom box in my '75....

I purchased a set of custom speaker boxes (for 6x9 speakers) from Crutchfield and mounted them in the back of my 73.

They fit on the ledge in the cargo compartment and this leaves some space on the floor of the cargo area.

I don't know if this will work for you, but if you want to take a look at what someone else has done you can check out my setup at: http://rogerdean.org/Corvette/speakers.htm

Good luck and have fun... that's what this vette thing is all about.

damn... I ordered it from Ecklers yesterday.. Should be here by next wednesday... Disappointed, by the look of your pic, there is no way in hell the t-tops will fit =( I thought they were smart enough to make the box go from the front of the wheel wells, all the way across, and to the back of the cargo area... This would have created a shelf for the tops. Looks like I will be out shipping returning them =(

I bought the same boxes from a local stereo store, cut them to a four inch depth rather than the 7 or so that was original and mounted them on a 1 x 6. I wedged this in between the two wheel wells on the floor. The T-tops go in with enough room for a hair between the seat and the top.

I could have cut them a little shallower and may at some point. I also considered placing them up high but was concerned about time, vibration and the durability of press board boxes hanging from a half dozen screws screwed into the end of the board. I guess I could have made the boxes out of 1 x 6, which would have been stronger and placed them up high with no concern.

Once I trim my new carpet I'll take the scraps and cover the board so it will look like it belongs.

I'll get the digitial camera out tonight and post a pic.

Thanks for the pic... With the tops in, you still get plenty of sound? Not blocked by them?

Still sounds good. About half the speaker is above the tops. You could raise them easily enough but I would support them, perhaps with a 2x4 or 4x4 cut to the size of the box, placed underneath them and carpeted. I just don't have any faith in the long term ability of the press board to hold with 4 screws holding it to the 1x6.

Got it completed, carpted the center of the board.

Looks pretty good and it allows the T-tops to be in the car. I can cut the boxes another 1/2 inch to an inch but I had to do it with a hand saw and it's not as straight as I would like. A friend of mine in North Carolina has a band saw and I'll take them off the board, four screws only, and cut them as small as possible and straight, at least straighter than they are now.

You did a first class job on your speaker box. I got mine from Ecklers.. No way in hell t-tops will fit in there.. Sending them back, sucks though. Spent $250 with shipping here, returning them and shipping will probably be another $25 back... $50 for nothing =( I don't know off hand, how much did the two boxes cost you? Will have to check it out tomorrow. =) I took an alternative route, at least until I do the box thing... Only 4x6 Speakers though =(
