Rear Speakers

Won my 01 Convertible (Triple Black) on auction last month!!! The car is in fantastic shape but ...

I've been having so much fun driving that I never noticed the rear speakers dont work (The door speakers work fine). If I understand other threads in this forum, the rear speakers are mid-range and are powered by the head unit. The Bose amps are for the subwoofers on the door.

I pulled the head unit out, found the speaker connector, and grounded out for left rear speaker. I could hear static when I did this, so I know the wiring from the head unit to the speaker is fine.

I also looked in my owners manual. I also checked fuse (#28) in the passenger IP toe-board and found o.k., but I am not sure how to check the relay (#45) and whether this has anything to do with the rear speakers and are just for the door Bose only.

I also read in another thread that the CD Changer hooks into the Toe-board IP Fuse Panel. I'm not sure if the car orginally had equipped, but I've found a loose cable running under the carpet by the door frame. Could this have anything to do with cutting out the rear speakers? Is it perhaps none of these things and it is just the head unit?

This is my 2nd Vette (I also own an 89 Blk Coupe) and would like to keep things stock, so I'm reluctant to install an aftermarket stereo. Any help out there is appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi there,
There are a few things that you need to be aware of.
First, yes, your fronts are amplified themselves. However, there is also a signal amplifier underneath the drivers IP, next to the center console. This is what your power relay turns on.
Now, from a basic point of view, I would say that you may have a problem with the head unit connector, or the other side, at the speaker.
Yes, the CD changer unit does run the cable down the passenger side of the car, WITH the other cables. However, I would also check in the rear center storage compartment for the other end to that cable.
Please keep us posted, c4c5:hb

c4c5specialist,

So it sounds like then Relay #45 runs the signal amp. That is o.k. then since both bose door speakers work. :duh

From your diagnostic then, I'm betting on the head unit and not the speaker itself since I did a ground test from the HU connector and heard static. I'm guessing this is a vaild test to verify that there is no short in the wiring and that the speaker itself still works. :confused

I also checked the center rear compartment and no cable. I digged around and found the other end of the cable tucked away in the passenger rear compartment. I'm guessing the original owner ran a power amp or something like it. I'll have to trace back EXACTLY where it connect to the toe-board fuse panel. :confused

Any other thoughts on what connection to the toe-board fuse panel could cause rear speakers to cut out? Since it looks like the original owner ran something else, I'm afraid the dealership wont cover under warranty. :hb

Any other help or advise is really appreciated! :Steer
