I need to replace the rear spring, need some suggestions on what would be the best brand to replace my current spring. Also, I'm not a mechanic, but is it difficult to replace the spring or should I leave this to the pro's? Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks,
Dick

A lot of people believe that the single leaf is the only way to go and maybe they are right. But for me, I have had both, I'm staying with the steel factory type. The last one I changed out took about 3 hours to do the job. My suggestion is that you get a new mouting plate and bolts. It just makes things easier to go back together. Replacing the outer spring bolts and cushions is a good idea too. If you have under the car exhuast, make sure to put the heat shield back on.

As for tools;

2 jack stands
hydralic jack
heavy duty C-clamp
basic hand tools

I did as described above using the 7 leaf "HD" spring. I've been very happy with the results.

Use a steel spring. There are only a few mfg of them now and they are not 100% like the GM spring. You will need 8" bolts to replace the 6.25" GM bolts to adjust the body. Eaton supposedly makes a correct spring but I haven't used one yet.

Rear Spring

I had the original Gymkana rear spring on my 76 re arched at a spring shop here in Richmond, worked out great for me and the total cost was about $200 with new pads, bolts and labor, That was two years ago and the height has stayed perfect.
