I'm in the process of converting my side exhaust over to rear exhaust so I can hear myself think when I drive. Just getting old I guess.
My question is I'm opening up the holes for the exhaust bezels and the way the bezels sit in the holes of the new valance they seem to cock out as if the tail pipes are coming from the outside edge of the car and face toward the center as they go through the bezel. I've search for a good photo of the underside of the car to see what direction the pipes face as they go through the bezel but haven't found anything. Does anyone know? Or even understand my question.

Thanks, Mark

Mark,

The pipes (tips) APPEAR to go straight out / through the rear valence. But this is an optical illusion. They actuall splay outward a little - level to the ground - but outward slightly.

Might I suggest that before you cut the current valence, but a new one with the correctly located holes and, more importantly, the small holes for the trim bezel posts through the valence. These holes are reinforced too. Then paint it to match. Don't forget to add the front and rear side ears that were removed for the side pipe installation (factory side mounts that is). You'll also have to weld the retaining tabs back on for the lower trim mouldings.

Don,
I do have a new valance with the holes already in them with the supports you spoke about. I'm just opening them up so the bezels fits in them. They were to tight and needed about 1/8" sanded off the hole diameter. But as I was fitting the bezels in the new valance it just seemed that the bezels were facing the wrong way. If you stand behind the car and face the valance the inside edge of the bezel (farthest away from you behind the valance) seems to go toward the outside of the car. In other words, if you were to make a straight line along each tail pipe they would meet in the center of the car about 6 feet from the rear of the car. They don't go straight back (parallel) My question was is this the way they are supposed to go.
I also don't understand the other things you were talking about. Can you elaberate what you said below.

Thanks for your help.

Mark,

The procedure for installing the UPC N14 Option or Off ZRoad Side Exhaust is covered in the AIM. Converting back to under car is the reversal.

Are you sure you have the bezels on the correct sides? They should look like the bezel is aimed slighly outward.

Don

Don,
I agree that's why I thought they didn't look right. Because they face the other way. I tried rotating bezels but it still looked funky. I wonder if the valance (after market) I got at Carlisle last year is junk. The supports around the holes that the bezels attach to look like they might be on the wrong sides. Maybe the bargain I got at Carlisle wasn't a bargain after all.
Thanks for your input.

Here's another option.... I have a 64 rear valance with the correct holes and bezels installed. I am looking for a rear valance without the holes. Maybe we could work out a trade. My car is white also, but I'm not entirely sure it is the "correct" white for 64.

I'm in Groton, CT about 2 hrs from Boston.

Subfixer,
I just spent the last 3 hours in the garage under the car and I took alook once again at the way the pipes will enter the valance and I think I'm OK with the one I have.
But I will be looking to sell the old valance with no holes in it.
If you want to make me a reasonable offer I was just going to try to sell it on Ebay anyways. Let me know if your interested and I'll sell it direct to you.
Mark

Oh SUB.....

What do you want for your OLD rear valance.

I have a similar problem my car was a side pipe.. and now I'm converting to rear exhaust
to get rid of the Glass pack issue.
(sounds like a boat)

OR

I need the hole dimensions to cut my valance.

Mark,
I'll take a look-see at what a new rear valance costs and go from there with an offer.

Vig,
If I buy Mark's valance, I'd be willing to sell mine at the same price plus shipping to the "other" coast.

Option#3

Sub.. we trade....

Vig~

Vig,

That could work also. Then we both only have to pay shipping. A couple of questions though..
1. What color is your's?
2. Is your's an original from a later year, an original with the holes patched over or an aftermarket panel?

Answers

It's white... ( was red originally.. the orig color should be there)
I don't believe it was patched.. I think original but I'll go for a crawl tonight & double check.

I will take a pix tonight if it's not to late...

I have to remove the rear bumpers to get that panel off?

( never did a C-2 before...)

Remove bumpers

Vig,
You don't need to remove the bumpers but you might have already seen that after crawling underneath.
Good luck to both of you.
Hopefully in a few weeks it will be cruising weather up where I live.

Mark,
If it ever really turns to Spring, I'll be cruisin too. Yesterday's snow should melt soon and looks like there will be cruising weather Monday.

Vig,
I'll be out of town until Sunday, so there's no rush for pics & info, but thanks ahead of time. My rear valance is White, originally Silver-Blue. It is the original from 64. The exhaust Bezels are not pitted, although they are the 39 yr old originals (not show quality).

Shipping info for me is Groton, CT 06340

Hole dimensions

Vig,
Are you and Sub all set with the valance trade or do you still want the hole dimensions to cut your own. Let me know if I can help.

Mark :cool

Hi Mark, I haven't heard from Vigman in a few days, so I'm not sure what he wants to do.

Hey Vig, If you want to get this deal going, please email me at the address in one of my earlier posts in this string. I know you are hard at work on a whole basketful of projects, and I'm in no hurry. Drop me a line on how you want to proceed.

Thanks,
Paul

Dude

Sorry.. I thought you said you were out of town for a few.. and I have been SWAMPED @ work..
Yes I would like to do this...

I thought we were going to exchange pix first..

I MIGHT be able to sneak out early today... and take a pix & post it here...

It's been raining here on & off

I was to pooped to wrench yesterday

( but I did manage to get in the New starter, new brake & clutch pedal covers,Gas cap cover, ash tray & other SMALL bits on the car.)

I'm still fouling plugs BIG TIME... carb running to rich & and she's burning oil like a bandit...

So sorry for not responding....Lets DO this!

Vig~

Vig, I know what you mean about work. I'll take a couple of pics tomorrow. If I can figure out how to post them I will. Or I can send to you by email.
I guess this means I have to wash it first :), since the car has been not running all winter due (like you) to other projects I'm working on.... New clutch, oil pan, etc....

Well no pix today

I got caught... got sucked back into to swirling vortex of terror.

Will try again tomorrow

Vig~
