Hey, all. :) Does it sound a little bit odd that both rear wheel bearings would require replacing on an '01 with under 20K miles on it? I've got my car in the shop right now because of a very loud droning/whining (louder at higher MPH's) and was told it was the left wheel bearing. Well they replaced it and there is still quite a bit of whining/droning so they've suggested that it be replaced on the right side as well. I told them to go ahead for a cool price of $600 (for both). Just seems a little odd this sort of thing would go bad with the miles it has on it.

(Grrrrrrrrr....I wished it were $600 for both. Got up there and it was $550 EACH.)

Quick!

If you haven't authorized yet check out Timken Hubs @ AutoZone. OEM supplier and they have the best price around $139 for rear hub. Just had mine done and they are working great.

Hi, TooTall! :) Thanks to you, I was able to stop installation of the 2nd hub. Appreciated! I dashed up to AutoZone and the guy there said there was no quality difference between the Delco ($389 each) and Timken ($126 each). There was a customer in line who got my attention and was shakin' his head a vehement, NO! I talked to him and he said every Timken hub his shop has installed has come back with a problem which has not been the case with the Delcos. He strongly urged me to steer clear of the Timken hub. That's all I needed to hear and called my mechanic and told him to go ahead with the install on the other side.

I'm still not understanding what would cause hub wear such as what my car had with under 20K miles on it. It's a little disconcerning (and expensive!), to say the least.

Many thanks, TooTall, for your input and advice - even if I didn't follow it. I really appreciate that you took the time to help me out. Very :cool .

Mary,
That sounds very odd for a car with 20k on it. Then again, how much has the car been sitting? I've seen this type of thing on airplane wheels when they sit for a long time, low time bearings with no regular use.
Please keep us informed on how this comes out. If they can't get rid of the noise after changing both hubs do you get your money back?? I hope they aren't stabbing in the dark at your expense.

Take care,

Cee

Sounds like your runflats are getting old. As they age they get hard and the road noise gets really bad. FWIW.

Hiya, Cee! :w Long time no "talk." Yeah, I'm a little concerned, too, about the stab-in-the-dark approach. When the first hub was replaced, they showed me. The mechanic held one side of it and I turned the other side - it did not turn easily - felt "rough." He said the other one was the same... not quite as bad, though. Thinking on it, the car had sat.... the bulk of the miles being put on in the first year. In fact, all but 2K (up until I got it) miles of them were put on in its first year... I purchased it in '04. The mechanic was saying that if a car is frequently raced that ya see this kind of wear on them. He goes through 2 sets each season racing his 'vette, apparently.

The noise if definitely "better" - but the droning is not gone. I can only hear it with the top up - and I can actually "feel" it under my feet - and sometimes the steering wheel. I noticed, too, that once I hit 45 MPH it increases appreciably.

Howdy, TedDBere (love that name!) :) I ditched the run-flats; otherwise I would've thought the same thing. Thanks for your input!

I have 2 of the Timken hubs on mine, no problems. BTW, they have a lifetime warranty- even if they do fail just bring back for another.
