1996 Corvette that I am looking at --- Previous owner mentioned that he "knocked the rear weights off of one of the rear wheels" actually here is his quote, "Your probably going to want to get the rear tires rebalaced as I knocked the weights off." --- How is this going to affect the driving performance and driving characteristics of the car? He said that it would be ok under 150 and that "you probably won't even notice" ---

sounds strange to me. :nono

Sometimes tire stores put balance weights

On the OUTSIDE of a Vette rim.. which people hate and remove..( like I did.. but I was at the tire store).. so to be safe... rebalance.

You may not like the idea of weights spoiling the LOOKS of your wheels, but they are EXTREMELY necessary. You CANNOT get a proper DYNAMIC balance with weights ONLY on the inboard lip.

There is a solution that lets you have your cake and eat it too.

Use tape weights just behind the spokes for balance of the outboard plane. If you have 16" wheels, you will have to use .100" tape weights on the ledge that is parallel with the tread of the tire. This is necessary so that they don't hit the calipers.

The problem you will have is finding a tire store kid that will do this properly. I can do it with my Coats 1001 balancer, and do it well, but it takes a little care, determination and an IQ above 70. If you can find a tire store kid that meets the above criteria, he can do it for you.

Some of the new machines even have the ability to tell the tire store kid EXACTLY where to put the weights so that they are hidden behind the spokes. I would not push it this far. Using one of those machines usually requires the tire store kid to have an IQ above 85. That's really pushing it.

If you only use inboard weights you can only get a static balance. This will keep the wheel from hopping up and down, but it will allow the wheel to wobble. Actually, using weights ONLY on the inboard lip aggravates the dynamic balance and causes the wheel to wobble worse than if it were not balanced at all.

This wobbling is PARTICULARLY bad on the Vette because of the sophisticated and nimble suspension.

I strongly recommend that you get a good DYNAMIC balance if you want the car to feel right at high speed (above 65 or so.)

Good luck,
