And the core is worthless......pcs broken off....teeth chipped....bla bla.....so i have to find a new one sans core charge....not gonna happen....im looking at about $1500.00 damage!:cry
And it didnt have any warning signs i would have expected a sound or 2 here and there....just all of a sudden , sounded like im rolling a cinder block under the back end....i already did the u-joints trying to help but its much deeper...
time for a hosing i suppose:mad ....the thing is on a rack in the shop so i have to move on it....it has a 308 in it and im going to go to a 355...the guy told me he could calibrate the speedo to work with it and i would notice a world of diffrence out of the hole....but if i went higher it would be hard out on the freeway and what not , but the 355 should be the one....any opinions or assist would be deeply appreaciated at this point....bossvette sent me a couple places so i have a couple leads....any thing else?
Thanks in advance....
Chas:w

What exactly is broken? ring gear teeth, posi pinion teeth, carrier cracked ? What is the reason for the breakdown, ring gear bolt back out, abuse?

he told me that screws that hold the ring gear in, came loose and bounced around inside it, destroying the interior and cracking the cover. Thanks to 1995 red vette , Brett, i may have the thing covered already.....found one down south still on a '78....says he believes it has a 355 rearend ...made a makr and counted the drive shaft.....if i dont find one here in mich...im going with that one....$500 and maybe $35 to ship it.....i have had quotes of over $1200 with no core.....i will let you know how bad it gets!thanks for the info guys...

New rear end on the way...

I ended up buying a new rebuild 355 rear end....Ikerds in Ill....$650 for the unit...$50 for the cover..$300 for the core deposit....mine is worthless so im out that....and $50 to ship it to my door....
I had this in a shop...which i will never return to.....about 3 weeks ago....told him what was happening. he took out the E-brake....and replaced the U-joints...seemed to be driving ok when i left , but i could still here a humming...the wife told me i was nuts, but, i went to a brake shop to be sure the E-brake was done right, thinking a pad was rubbing or something.he told me i need a master cylindar first and foremost...no big deal, i bought that for $29 at Carquest....but that while up on his rack he could hear bad things in the unit....Theresa drives it home , seemed ok....next day, i drive it about 3 houses down the street and i hear that noise from hell again...park in garage, now im leaking!...i think if the guy had done his job i would still have had a usable core. i had a better company bring a rollback truck and take it there...so this is where im at now...vacation over and i didnt drive it once...$1050 for parts...and $400 to finish the job....
lesson learned...make sure you research the company doing the job.
i thought this was a good place, found out diffrent. my bad...never again.
Im changing to a 355 rear end...i had a 308...he told me i should feel a world of diffrence....this true?I will keep ya posted on the results.:w
Thanks, Chas

bummer...on the bright side, you rear end is set for the next 100,000+ miles, which is more then they can say about stevies knees

you will feel a world of difference on accelleration, or at least thats what everyone says.

You will see about a 400-600 rpm increase cruising, MPG will go down, but you'll leave the line quicker. 355's are a nice gear choice. It's not the first time ring gear bolts backed out,but it shouldn't happen. At least now you know the differential is new. $1,500 is about what a lot of shops would charge to remove it and rebuild it- I've heard of people spending more. How about $1,600 for a dealer to replace the rear bearings! Parts run about $100.

Enjoy your car and don't forget to replace the speedo gear to keep it accurate.

hey guys, don't feel bad. the diffs that disney uses in the GM test track vehicles are basically a modified Mark Williams ford 9incher.
completly build they cost $14,000 each. when the ride first started running the average lifespan was 30 minutes. now with many more mods we get 6 months.
i've seen them pop the heads of the bolts off regularly

Robin

Robin it sounds like a nice job you have there at DW. I haven't been there in 10 years but I always wondered about working there.
