72-LT1

Guest
Hey Guys,
Will be having the engnine rebuilt sometime soon, and want to keep it pretty much stock, but get more HP out of it, what should I have done to it?
Will the heads produce any more by getting a good valve job, while keeping the solid lifters? Should I get the block bored over or just get new pistons and all at the original size, with a new LT1 Cam? Any suggestions would be helpfull.

Thanks

Rob

The machine shop will tell you whether the block needs to be bored.
Here is what was done to mine: Bored .030 over, new 9 to 1 forged pistons, new LT-1 cam, crank had to be turned .010. The rotating assembly was fully balanced. I had them do some mild porting of the heads, along with a 3-angle valve job. I wanted it to still be an LT-1 motor as much as possible, with a few perks. It runs really strong, and I am very pleased with the results.

Rich,

You probably got quite a few more HP out of it right?

Rob-

The numbers on the dyno sheet said 386 HP and 354lb. of torque. That was on their engine dyno with their headers on, I have stock exhuast manifolds on it.

LT-1 Lifters

Hi,
My LT-1 had been rebuilt with hydraulic lifters. Personally I feel mixed about this.
While the engine is no longer as "original" it will perform better and have less repairs.

The engine no longer has the ability to rev 6000+ rpms, would I really want to do that to a 30+ year old numbers matching engine and risk ruining the block and value?

Here is an interesting article on the hydraulic versus solid lifter discussion:
