GM announced today that they are recalling 6,006 2011 - 2012 Corvette coupes that might fail to meet a federal safety standard covering rear hinges.

The recall covers 2011 and 2012 models — including 5,755 in the United States and 217 in Canada. The issue could allow the rear hatch to separate from the vehicle in a crash. Dealers will replace both rear hatch hinges most of which are about 4,000 2011 Corvettes.

Letters to owners will be mailed Oct. 14 with instructions on how to have their vehicle repaired.

Don't you wonder why there is that kind of basic problem 6 years into the model run?

because GM tries to find a way to build the car at less cost. they do this all the time as i had a new 2000 impala with no problems but i bought a new 2004 impala and if not for the GM extended warranty it would have cost me thousands of $$$. the cars should get better as they go into the model run not worse. they beat the suppliers over the head for less cost and of course the supplier cut corners to cut his costs. i hope the new GM does not do what the old GM did or it will fail also.

I guess I should be glad I just bought a 2012 Grand Sport convertible so no hinge problem. :w
But, I am sure that I will get a recall letter about something.

Did what? The so-called new GM is pretty profitable.

I was commenting on motormans reference to the way GM treats their suppliers (hopefully that is actually in the past), not the financal part.

If you read the recall carefully, it's obvious that the problem did not exist for six model years. It's only existed for parts of two model years.

The break points for the recall were not cited, but that it covers a little over 6000 cars in the late 2011 and very early 2012 model years, one might guess there was a supplier change during MY11, that supplier was making hinges which were faulty and GM recently discovered it, perhaps during some crash tests.

Recalls

I don't think we have we have it that bad. I have had 8 Corvettes now. 6 I have bought new. I have had only 1 recall notice for all those cars. Not bad in my opinion. I know people with Benz's and Fords and just about any other manufacturer you can think of, in fact Audi just popped into my head with a lot more problems than we experience with out precious Vettes. My boss had a new Audi that spent an entire year in the shop before they finally gave up and gave him his money back plus cost of inconvenience etc.

I wanna make sure I got this right~

GM is putting out a recall to fix cars that haven't had a problem, right?

I have yet to see any issues (or even speculation) on any of the forums I'm on, regarding this issue. (I'm on a few of them, too.)
It seems to me that GM is taking care of the "possible" problem, rather than waiting for a trend to start.

You know, GM could:

delay, delay, delay

deny, deny, deny

deceive, decieve, decieve...

but they aren't. They're being "pro active."

Just wish they we're more proactive regarding the LS7 engines that are grenading...:eyerole

As a matter of fact, yes, there has been a lot of talk about it on other forums, and if an unsold 2011 or 2012 at a dealer, is finally sold, and exported to Europe - the owner crashes it, and it is determined that the rear hatch hinges are the cause of any harm to the owner, then GM could be held liable.

On a side note: I'm not saying GM is perfect - but I'm still amazed at the number of people that are so quick to jump down their throats without having a full understanding of the situation...
