Hi,

My Volt meter usualy reads 13 - 14 volts but this morning it dropped to about 11 Volts and the red light came on in the display.

Am I looking at a new alternator or do I just need to put my foot down for a long stretch.

Thanks in advance

red light

Thanks mate,

This could cause me a bit of a problem as in england new alternators for my car are not easily found.

going to be a long day.

Any chance you can locate a rebuilder in your area? Most of the time it is the best option, (even here in the states) to have a professional tear yours down and put it back together. Often they can upgrade the amp output while they are in there.

Thanks again,

I do know a very talanted engineer but he is busy for the next two weeks!!!!!

Looks like I will have to charge her up every night until someone can help me.

Life is great !!!!

Make sure your serpentine belt is tight ! The one on my Buick streched so far that the tensioner ran out of throw . I'm lucky it didn't come off . Cliff

Odds are that the brushes are worn. Are there not alternator rebuilding shops there? They surely can disassemble and replace the brushes.

Good luck,

Hey British Bob! You can purchase a rebuild from MIDAMERICA for your '86 for $220. They are remanufactured by AC Delco, and there is no core charge, which will save on shipping charges. Why wait two weeks, when you can get overnight delivery? We can use the business to off-set our trade deficit. There may be other sources. If you are interested, I will send you some supplier links.

I wonder if we could find a rebuild kit for him and save him a ton of cash. Removing the regulator and brushes is a slice...and a lot less cash then a complete rebuilt one. Plus look at the shipping to the Isles....

Whoa! Eagle85C4, we are talking about our economy, balance of trade, jobs, euros, etc........SST's cross the Atlantic daily; the U-Boat threat has been greatly reduced allowing the flow of goods to and from the Brits on a regular basis.

Corvette Alternator in the UK

Bob, are you in the East London/Essex/Kent area? If so try customville (020 8590 1449), they are not usually cheap but they often have a good stock of electrical parts. Also you could try Claremont in Kent - (www.corvette.co.uk). He recently surprised me with a very good rebuilt starter quote for my 90.

If you are local to East London there's a guy I use in Chingford (E4) who actually rebuilt my starter and I have used for years for starters and alternators on several US and European cars . I can't find his number at present (I usually pop round as he's only down the road) but you could try the yellow pages for B&H Auto Electrical. He usually offers a real quick turnaround too.

Regards, Malc.

same thing happend to mine cause parts are dear over here i found daewoo cars & hyundi are the same as 86 alternaters

Hey Brit-

Before you go assuming the worse, have you check the pos and neg batter posts to insure good contact? Messed with either terminal lately?

Sorted

I have now got a fixed car , some £300 later!!!! It was the alternator which in its self wasnt that expencive but the mechanic told me that the fan belt needed replacing as it was about a few hard drives away from snapping.

Extra cost, but you gotta keep them on the road.

Cheers for all your help and advice though.
