Trying to take off the door strikers on my 61 to clean them up. I can't break all the screws free. I've tried using a ratchet with a philips head screw driver. Won't budge. I tried an impact wrench but am so afraid of hitting it too hard and cracking the door jamb. Any ideas?

If I do get them free do I have to worry about the striker nut plate on the other side of the jam falling in? It appears from the diagram that if the striker nut plate retainer is installed it should not be able to happen. But I don't want to assume anything.

I hgave to tell you I have been struggling with this for a while and I treid the impact and it did not crack any thing but it also did not remove them

I Have been soaking them with nut buster from the back and it also did not work

I then drilled out the heads figuring I could get it with a stub remover.Still not working.

I also then put on a set of vice grips and put the tourch to the vice grip (the vice grip acted as a conductor to get the stub cherry red No way to get the tourch in near the stud alone)any ways still did not budge.

At this point I am just going to leave the passenger side alone and drill and retap the drivers side. This is something I should have left alone for sure

Wow. That's not too encouraging. My next try was going to be drilling out the screw and using the stub remover. Maybe I should just try to clean them on. I had hoped to be able to get them off, clean them, and polish/paint them to get it looking good.

I left mine on my 61!

I am quickly concluding that is the prudent thing to do.

Were you able to clean it up good and get it shining without removing? I've seen them listed on ebay as "polished" and do they ever shine. I don't know how they got them that way. Paint?

The strikes were cad plated and will not have a high chrome type shine. You can clean them (soap and water, I like Simple Green) and then use a fine polishing compound to give them cad type sheen. If they have rusted or are lacking cad plating you can purchase cad paint from a company like Eastwood. It is not for NCRS judging but provides a good look.

Hope I have helped!

You have indeed. My car will never be judged, so if I can't get them looking decent using polishing compound as you suggest, I may go the paint route. Thank you very much.
