I am installing new seat cushions and while I had the cushions out I was going to fix another problem. My seat won't move forward/backward on the passenger side. I thought a coin could be stuck in the track. I am trying to remove the seat and the two front bolts are all I can remove. The two bolts in the back won't break and all that turns is a big square washer thing underneath the bolt. The bolts in the back look much different than the bolts in the front...
 
sorry to say, but you will need a friend under the car with a vice grip to hold the nut so you can get it out.. spray it good with penetrating oil first and let it soak some to make the job a little more bearable. best of luck to you.
 
Curtis, thats not right........The two bolts that you are trying to remove have the head inside the channels. These bolts are grade 8 and the square acts as a washer. This to prevent the seat from coming off the channel in a collision.

These nuts are spot welded to the square washer.......

You need to remove the seat by the 4 bolts that hold the channels to the floor...then you can remove the channels from the seat bottom.
I know this because I just did this....trying to get my seats out for a carpet project....

All four bolts should be the exact same bolt, and they each are at the end of the slide rails, with about .75" or so of rail extending beyond the bolt.

From the top down, it goes Bolt -> Rail -> Carpet -> Floor pan -> welded square nut. If the nut underneath the car is spinning, then you've got problems.
Often, at least on my car, it's not hard for the carpet fabric to get wrapped around the threads during insertion or remove, thus making it a very tight thread. Just need to work at it.
For the rears, I always use a 12" or so extension on the ratchet so I can have some room to swing the ratchet. Just hold the extension so you keep it flush on the bolt head.
 
Sorry if i misled anyone.. I was referring to removing the bolts going thru the floor. At least on my car i needed someone underneath to hold the nuts..It is entirely possible that these were not the original bolts and nuts.. they were however very tight and rusty and were lock nuts down there under the floor pan.
 
On my 81......there were no nuts on the underside of the car.....the 4 bolts holding the entire seat, including the channels to the floor pan are the same.

The bolts holding the seat bottom to the channels are different. 2 are just threaded bolts in the front going into the channel and two nuts and bolts holding down the back, with the nut being inside the seat bottom spot welded to this 2x2 metal plate(ala washer).

I looked at it last night because I have not put them back yet. When I was trying to take the back bolts off this metal plate was spinning and beginning to tear into the plastic. Not knowing any better, I cut the bolt off and then saw what as happening......Now I'm looking for a replacement bolt for this....anybody?
