Help, on my '54 I'm having trouble separating the outer steering column from the steering box. I have unbolted the box from the frame and am able to slide the column and box from the firewall to the frame, but am unable to remove the complete unit from the vehicle. Do I have to separate the box from the column for removal? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
When your car was assembled, the steering column was already within the body when the body was dropped. The short answer to your question is that you cannot get the column out without lifting the body.
You can remove the front crossmember, crunch the drivers inner fender in, and pull it out from the bottom, or you can cut the firewall. Otherwise, you simply can't get it out any other way.
Don't know if removing the outer sleeve will give you more wiggle room. The problem is the 2 "holes" in the firewall and dashboard. 55, 56, 57's had a removable metal plate on the firewall that would allow you to lift the column up....53 and 54 did not. Chuck
