On my 96 CE LT4, the shift pattern in the shift lever is loose and rattles. 1st question is how to fix this?
2nd question is how do you get the shift knob off?
3rd question, is replacing the shift lever and going to one of the shorter levers difficult to do? Worth it?

Thanks,

First question is why is it loose ? Has it been out before? I suspect that it has if it is loose and rattles. What could be making it rattle the shift handle is leather covered. As far as a short through shifter goes I think it is worth it. But you will have to take the consol apart to do the job. You should get a manual for your car as it will explain how to. As far as the shift pattern and knob you may have to replace them if they have been damaged.:w

Still need help.

Got the 6 sp shift pattern button out. Book says to remove retainer and then unscrew shift knob.

How does that retainer come out? I have pulled and pulled on it with pliers and it does not budge. Is this thing glued in or something??

I think I do want to put in a short shifter; is the B&M unit a good one? Or is there a better one?

Thanks,

The pin that holds the knob on can sometimes be difficult to remove. You might see if you can turn the knob in one direction or the other as it might be binding the pin. I have had several cars with the B&M I have had good results.

Lanny,

You should contact Bill Boudreaux (ZFDoc) @ www.zfdoc.com
He is the guru of the ZF6 tranny and lives in Phx. In fact, he is my personal mechanic and knows all about the short throw shifter. He even sells his own design. You can email him or call him. Tell him Jeff w/ the black LT4 sent ya'. ;)
