Replaced rear wheel bearing

torque

When my spline started making the noise, I tried over torquing the nut. Of course this did nothing, and I can't image it being good for the bearing. Once it fails/worn, it's failed/worn.

I have had my '96 LT$ for three years, and I just put in the third set of rear bearings. I do a lot of track days with the car, and the bearings just don't hold up to the abuse. I've used AC Delco and the cheapies both, and neither of them lasted. Several members of the forum have suggested over-torqueing the axle nut to 200 ft/lb on cars that see track time, so I'm trying that this time. I will re-torque before each track weekend, and see if they last any longer. Or maybe not as long!

Cheers,
Barry

Put some bearing grease on the spline befor installing. This help quiet things as well as torqueing them down to the correct reading.
