I've got a 64 327/300 that I'm converting to 365. I have the correct 461 intake manifold, 70 LT1 Cam, etc....

I have been watching all the 2818 carbs on ebay for a while trying to determine a reasonable price. The rebuild/restored ones seem to go for big $$$$, while the questionable rebuildable ones go for the price of a new Holley 1850.

Since my car is a driver, I'll probably end up with a replacement Holley 1850 and use 66/67 oil fill tube and PVC system. I'd like to keep the original choke tube vs electric choke, but I'm not sure that will work on an 1850 carb. I would like to keep the underhood "appearance" as true to correct as possible

Anyone know if the 1850 choke can be adapted to the 2818 style choke?

No, but...

The primary butterfly shaft in factory manual choke Holley 4-barrels is a different length from those in Holleys that are factory equipped with a hot air choke like the 2818.

However, you can buy a Holley electric choke conversion kit for a manual choke 1850 and then convert the kit to work off hot air. You would have to buy a 2818-style bakelite cover to use with the electric choke kit housing.

That's exactly what I want to try. Is there a threaded nipple on the carb (1850) for the hot air pipe to thread onto behind the bakelite cover (like on a 2818)? I can't see one in pictures of an 1850.

The threaded nipple is cast as part of a separate choke housing. It is not part of the carb main body. A manual choke 1850 has very few choke parts that you can re-use with a hot air choke system. You can salvage the choke butterfly plate, shaft, and linkage, but that's about it.

In your shoes I would consider a new 80457 Holley. It costs about $250, and comes with an electric choke that you might be able to modify into a hot air type.

Thanks Jerry. I'll look at the 80457 w/electric choke and try to find a usable 2818 choke housing.

When I did mine I bought 2 junky ones and put them together to make one really good one. I have some spare parts leftover. Let me know what you need.

Thanks John. Went I get the new carb, I'll contact you to see if you have what I need (if it looks like it will work).
