Replacing antena

Would like to replace the antena on a "93". Has anyone done this before? Tried replacing the mast, it worked good for a while but now it don't want to return all the way down again. I'm not sure how big a job it is. Thanks for any input!:w

I did my '89, I'd think your '93 is similar.
Figure an hour or two: it involves removing the rear inner fender to get room to work on the antenna.
Not too bad a job, really.

The plug in for your antenna will be in the rear deck under the back trim peice. (The trim where your back window latch is.)

I did my '94 a few weeks ago. You easily can get to the mounting bolts through the outer tail lamp hole. Here's a method that avoids removing the wheel and inner fender.

1:Remove (in this order) the lisence plate, left backup lamp housing, inner tail lamp housing and finally the outer tail lamp housing (each item is held by 2 srcrews). You can now reach in (unless you have arms like hulk hogan) through the outer tail lamp hole and disconnect/unbolt the antenna.

2:In your hatch area, remove the package (center) tray and remove the cargo shade. Disconnect the antenna and power leads.

3:Pull on the rubber bulkhead grommet until it pops loose and pull the wires out.

4:Now you'll have to lay on your back to get the antenna out from the space between the muffler and the rear quarter panel.

5:Put some vaseline on the grommet when re-installing. It makes it easier to slip in and (hopefully never) take out again.

good luck

93 antenna

I did my wife's 94 coupe and didn't need to remove anything. Did everything from the bottom, wear eye protection because you'll knock dirt down on yourself. Set up a drop light to light the antenna and work with 3/8 or 1/4" extensions and open end wrenches, (10mm if I remember right). Don't try to hurry and just be patient. The top bolt will be pretty much by feel, but you can do it. I'm 6' and 195lbs and was able to get my arm up there. The key to doing it is patience,......and a cold one ...or two!! Regards, Frank

Very much appreciated

Thanks for all the typing. Everyone has different ways of doing things. That's the beauty of this forum...I get choice advice! Try getting that anywhere else....you just can't. Now I know I can do the job! Thanks again!:BOW

i fixed my 92 the sameway sidepipe did it. lot of dirt in the eyes but not to bad. i took it apart cleaned and greased installed the new arial and it works great. i did cut about 4 inches off the arial before i installed it. i have read on the forums that this will prevent the problem of not retracting all the way. its been done now about a year with no problems. robert

Thanks for the tip Robert. I believe I'll try that. The antenna works but just does not fully retract. I hate to go for a new antenna motor at about $130.00 if I can possibly get the one I have to work. Interesting fact about the 4 inches...that seems to be the problem.:_rock

Here's a thought...

From the "Corvette Central Parts and Accessories Catalog 4C" page 22

Stuck Antenna?
If your Power Antenna does not retract all the way, you may be able to use WD40 or cooking oil on the mast to help lubricate, this may help from having to replace the antenna.

Done this twice, so far, w/o removing the inner well. The rebuild kit saves cash and the job is described accurately here.

Never needed to cut the mast.

WD-40 is a CLEANER. I cannot aver that cleaning/lubing the mast often, improves the life; it would seem to, but I haven't found such to be the case. Any oil will collect road dirt; any excess gets wiped quite effectively the retraction.

Enjoy this simple task, but let the mufflers cool first!
