Hey all! I have a question. I need to replace the windshield in my 75 stingray. I got a place to do it but he said I'd have to order the seal myself. I've looked at couple different sites and just not sure if I'm getting the right thing. He seemed to think the seal would be very expensive. What I've seen is like $25 buck. A windshield seal/weather strip. The frame and mounting stuff is all ok. Would this be a safe bet that what I'm looking at is the right part? I'm female so all the help I can get will be appreciated.

Maybe if you post up some of the web pages where the folks here can see what you're looking at,
I'm sure someone will look at them and give you a thumbs up, or a thumbs down. The more info
you provide, the easier it will be for someone to give you a correct answer.

And by the way......since I see that this is your first post.........

My advice would be to find an auto glass shop which knows what it's doing. Why should your gentleman require you to find a seal? He should know where to obtain what is needed and include the cost in his installation fee.

The windshield is glued to the windshield frame with a urethane gasket material. To remove the existing windshield will require that the seal between the frame and glass be cut, either with a razor blade tool or wire. There is no separate gasket. Any glass shop that can get the windshield should have the materials to install it. You don't need a specialized Corvette shop to replace the windshield, just a better glass shop.

The Corvette windshield is installed with urethane sealant, just like every other new car on the planet. GM NEVER used any of the cheap butyl tapes, which are usually found used as short-cuts by shops that don't know what they're doing (it's technically illegal to use butyl tape to install a GM windshield, as butyl won't retain the windshield in a frontal crash).

Any decent auto glass shop can install your windshield with urethane, and will have everything needed on hand. :thumb

Windsheild

Up to the 1980's the butal seal was used to install windshields you can find them in most Corvette Parts Books Volunteer Vette, Corvette America ect.
Most windshield replacement co. don't to use them because of liability the possibility of the windshield coming out in a crash I own a body shop in the 1980's and in 99 percent of the crashes they stay intact the other 1 percent it didn't matter My observation and experience is that the windshield frame will flex when you drive and turn on an incline with the urethane the glass won't flex a little and the windshield will eventually crack under stress it happen to my 76 so Buy the seal instead of letting them use the urethane

Take it to Safelite Auto Glass or someplace like that. They not only have the correct materials to install the new window, but also to correctly apply a primer so the bond is correct. Windshields don't really just set in the frame- they can be off not only up/down or left/right, but can also be off corner to corner. (left top corner high, right lower corner low)

And on top of all that, if it leaks, it's theirs- they get to fix it. :happyanim:You don't need a Corvette specialty shop for this one.
