Replacing fuel injector

Need some help please. How hard is it to replace a leaking fuel injector on an 85, please keep in mind i have limited mechanical skills. Should i just bite the bullet and have a qualified person do the job or round up my buddies and give it a try? Any comments would be helpfull.
 
It won't be an easy job. Replacing the injector itself isn't difficult but getting to the injector will require taking a lot of stuff off.

But with that being said, I would still do it myself. I'm the type who doesn't like others working on my car.

And if you're going that far, check the other injectors because you don't want to take all that stuff apart and then have to do it again a few months later. Your injectors are almost 20 years old if they're the stock ones. There are various places that rebuild and/or clean injectors such as: www.tpis.com or www.cruzinperformance.com

I am pretty sure I have seen here that if you do one, you should do them all. You can do a search and find out. There was a local Napa shop that cleaned my brothers injectors. I think it was 19 bucks each.

Hey Murph, what makes you think that the injector is leaking...what symptoms are you experiencing??? Edmond is right...gotta remove a lotta equipment to get to those buggers. You need to be sure that the injector(s) is/are the problem. I have an 85 and had a problem with a slight hesitation at idle...thought I had either a fouled plug or a bad injector. Really gave me a fit until I checked my timing. Set the timing and adjusted the MAF sensor based on an article I got in the techinal section of CAC. My baby purrs like a kitten now...made all the difference. Don't know what led you to believe you have a leaking injector...just thought I'd share what I did to eliminate my challenge. Good Luck!
 
Can't you check to see if you have a leaking injector with a pressure guage. While the car is shut down, the fuel pressure should stay at a certain PSI for a period of time. If it falls off sooner, then you know there is a problem. That is just something I thought I read.

Fuel Injector causing a miss?

Hi folks, I'm new to the forum. I just picked up an '86 L98 manual trans. It was basically a basket case but a good start for a winter project.

I could use some advice on troubeshooting a engine miss.

When I first got it started (after sitting about 6 months), the check engine light was on and running very rough. Replaced the MAF sensor, check engine light went out and ran better but not great. Then pulled the plugs, #7 was gas fouled and black, all the rest were nice and clean. I did a compression test - #7 was 150 psi, all the rest were in the 140-150 range. I was pretty pleased with that, since it was basically an unknown engine.

Next step was to replace cap, wires and rotor with AC Delco parts. Runs slightly better but still misses on acceleration. #7 plug is still black though not gas fouled.

My question is: could I have a bad injector? Maybe the pintle is sticking open dumping too much gas? Any other ideas?

You can also use a ohm meter to check each injector. I think they should read in the 13-16 area. Just unplug the injector and hook the thingies up to them.

You might want to start another thread with that, maybe you could get more response. It is possible, have you notice any gas in the oil? With replacing the wires, plugs, cap, and rotor, that might rule out a bad plug wire or contact. You can check the fuel pressure after you shut the car off. Based on how long the pressure takes to bleed off the system, might give you an indication of what is going on. I would maybe try that route.

Did you get that resistance value out of a manual. I had a hard time finding it in my manual. I initially thought it was around 8 ohms.

I got together with one of the members a couple months ago and I swear he said 13-16 ohms. But I will check in my book when I get back home from lunch. I'm goin' for Mexican food! :beer
 
Eureka! I probably should post this in a new thread for everyboby's reference. But here goes: I pulled the fuel injectors (not an easy task) and bingo - the tip on #7 was cracked and the plunger stuck open!!

Now it's a a matter of just getting them serviced.

Does anybody have any suggestions for replacing the many cracked and broken vacuum lines?

Well, I just removed the injectors. It was pretty straightfoward. You have to remove the TPI cover and at least the right side intake runners. The hard part was all the vacuum lines and connectors.

I'll let you know how it is going abck together when I get the injectors back.

I plan on sending them to Cruzin Performance in MI. They were recommended in another post. I'll let you know the results.

Started my car the other morning to let it warm up, came back and thier was a puddle of fuel on the ground! Popped the hood and the last injector on the left bank was wet. Update went to work on the injector saturday afternoon with my buddy, to my suprise i could not get it to leak has not leaked since!
 
Be very careful working on that and make sure to have a fully charged fire extinguisher around. We had a member who had his car catch on fire.
