replacing fuel return pipe over gas tank (78 Vette)

I've developed a fuel leak that appears to be caused by a leaking fuel return pipe above the gas tank. (I think this is true because I replaced the fuel pump (and carburator) and while testing that out is excatly when the leak started to occur.)

(Runs beautifully but don't like the idea of being a moving bomb!)

Could anyone please let me know the best way of being able to replace these rubber pipes ? I'm assuming I need to tackle it by removing the trim piece below the back window but if someone could give me a clue if this is correct I'd be very gratefull.

Many Thanks in Advance, Nigel Aves

The steel return lines are routed to the top of the tank, then a rubber hose connects the lines to the tank lines. You can get to these rubber hoses pretty easily. Remove the frame holding the gas lid... my '78 had a chrome ring holding the assembly together. Remove the rubber boot that is under the lid assembly, and you should see the rubber hoses for the supply and return lines. Getting to the clamps may be the most difficult part of the whole job.

Hope this helps!

BTW, welcome to CAC!! Post some pics of your Vette when you can!

Welcome Nigel!

Welcome to Corvette Action Center and good luck with your project.

My 78 had that same problem. Gas was leaking down over the top of the gas tank, pooling in the spare tire carrier and dripping over my hot mufflers! Not to mention getting light-headed while driving and trying to get to the mechanic.

The mechanic removed the gas lid door and rubber neck and accessed the hoses through there. He had small hands and skinny arms. Anyhow, it is a pretty easy fix, just a little tight on space to maneuver.
