Anyone replace the rear main on an '85, and how much of a pain was it ?

Its really not that bad...you have a two piece seal...you have to remove the starter, exhaust, and oil pan...Then remove the oil pump and the rear cap...in the cap you will see half the seal (note the direction the seal is placed) ...around the crank you will see the other half...poke it out with something that will not scratch the bearing...oil up the new seal and slip it around the crank...push the seal up into the crank about an eighth of an inch...this will drop the other end an eight...now do the opposite with the other seal in the cap....this will make for a better seal as it won't allow the two surfaces and the joint to line up...put a dab of ATV on each surface that connects the two seals and put the cap back on and torque to spec...then put the oil pump on (torque) oil pan, starter and exhaust and your good to go.
