Replacing steering wheel - scared of SIR

I'm replacing my "showing-its-age" steering wheel with a lovely original from Contemporary Corvette. Problem is, Helms says to "Install Load Tool J37808 by connecting 'Base of Column' lead of tool."

Well, of course I ain't got one of those. The battery has been disconnected since October 7th. Is it possible that the DERM has bled down to the point that the bag module (squib) is now safe? Or...do I need to get the load tool and follow the Helms procedure to the letter?

UPDATE - I just spoke with Gordon Killebrew. The battery only needs to be disconnected for about 10 minutes for the DERM to bleed down to the point where the airbag won't fire.

Then, after loosening the two captive screws in the back of the sterring wheel, you can pull that bag out to turn it over, and simply pull the yellow connector straight out from the back of the airbag module.

Hope this helps someone in the future.

I am sorry I hadn't seen your post earlier - yes, it is indeed that safe & simple - I have seen my mechanic do this on countless (C5) COrvettes and he he said the procedure is similar
