Rer end clunks

When I accelerate and de-accelerate the rear end clucks. I forget, but when I lifted the rear end the rear wheel either jiggled at the 12/6 o'clock or the 3/9 o'clock (I forget), but not both. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

My '65 had slop in the ring and pinion. It didn't howl but there was excessive backlash. For a clunk upon accel and decel I'd first check the u-joints then the differential. Get it in the air and have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you listen for the clunk

agree with Tom - check u-joints
